Wheel shaking-->Tie rod problem. Price? Install? Help.
My steering shakes all over the place and its not the tires. I'm 100% sure its the tie rods. How much does it cost to replace them? Should I do the inner or outer? Any help with be great. Thanks.
the outer one was about $35 from autozone. its pretty easy to replace...the only bad thing is you should get an alignment when you are done. what i would do is try not to unthread the lock nut and just unthread the tie rod itself. this way when you put the new one on it will be threaded in the same amount.
For a rough alignment count the number of turns requird to remove the end then put it back on the same number of turns. Check to be sure its the tie rod ends. Jack the car up and support on jack stands. Grab the wheel at the front and back (9 and 3 o'clock) and push and pull whlie looking at the outer tie rod end. If there is relative motion at the tierod end then it needs to be repalced if not look elsewhere for your shake. At the same time you can check your wheel bearings. Grab the wheel at the top and bottem (12 and 6 o'clock). Push and pull if it moves at all then its more than likely the wheel bearings or upper/lower ball joints.
