Default 16-19 Year old American future racers, Chance of a lifetime.

I lifted this from F1-Live.com

Future American racing campions, start your engines!
Phase 1 of Red Bull Driver Search gets underway [29/03/03 - 08:05]

Phase 1 of the 2003 Red Bull Driver Search program kicks into high gear next week across the nation. In a once-in-a-lifetime shot at the top, thousands of aspiring champions between the ages of 16 to 19, male or female, will be testing their talent at 26 indoor go- kart centres from coast to coast starting April 1.

After a series of heated elimination rounds spread over 6 weeks and ending May 18, a total of 104 winners will qualify to advance to Phase 2. Starting in June, they will compete in one of 4 regional same-format outdoor go-kart events organized and run by Red Bull. The best 12 young racers will be selected to participate in the semi- final competition to be held in Sebring, Florida on September 2-4 in 2 litre race cars.

In Sebring, the go-kart winners will join the 12 other racers selected by expert ‘undercover scouts' from the traditional U.S. racing formulae. The 2003 Red Bull Driver Search program aims to discover and support highly talented young drivers already in racing, as well as the “diamond in the rough,” lacking the knowledge and contacts needed to embark on a career in racing.

The long term goal is to have a steady group of 4 to 6 American drivers racing in Europe, groomed to break into Formula 1 and compete for the World Championship.

Next week, will mark the beginning of an extraordinary opportunity for countless young American drivers with a world title in their dreams. The quest for the best will continue through spring and summer, climaxing in October at the famed Paul Ricard Circuit, where the 2003 Red Bull Driver Search winners will be chosen. Please make sure to follow and cover this great American story.

I'm 17 But I don't think a season of autocrossing would make me able to potentially race a Formula One car then again, who knows...

How much experience do you have to have to have a chance at this? They said they are looking for the untrained "diamond in the rough"... tell me more about karting. I'm 16 and interested.

Just called Andretti's in Georgia and non of the managers have any clue about it even though they have recieved a ton of calls. That sounds pretty strange.

Do you have a link to the page where you got this information? This makes it sound like they have specific races at these karting centers, and if that's the case then I'd like to know the schedule.

I'm still not clear on this - So are there specific races or are these "undercover scouts" just going to watch every person that's 16-19 at every single race in each of these karting places? I love going to Dromo1, but at $25/run it's not the most cost-effective driving time. I'd like to know when these people are going to be there so that I can overlap my time spent on recreation with time spent potentially being noticed by a scout. I hope that made sense.

I am 18 and if this is open to the public that doesn't have a go-kart I'm in, but I have a feeling thats it's more for people who already kart.

Its for people ages 16-19 who can scoot their asses around a track the fastest.

So was this thing complete BS or what? Still no dates are posted on the website,, and I tried calling Andretti Speed Lab in ATL a few times and they said they would call me as soon as they got the date... they never called me. Did anyone get a drive in the kart??

I went to the initial event and got my *** handed to me by many experienced kart drivers. I heard that one of them (Alan Sciuto?) was a shifter kart champion and already had some sort of professional contract. I'm pretty sure that it's for real.
