It was fabbed out of aluminum sheet metal. (its not quite finished yet) My question is.. is this going to sheild the heat or absorb it and surround the filter with hot air? My question might be vague, but if anyone can answer it, its appreciated.
It depends on what it's attached to. I would actually get header wrap instead. That's one of the biggest issues to address first.

This was more of an Autoshop boredom project. But its a short ram and the shield is directly behind the filter. I also agree with the header wrap. lemme try n snag some pics.
IT will surround the filter w/ hot air once it heats up. If the inner surface of the sheild is hot to the touch, then the sheild is useless. When I ran this setup, I lined my shield on the inside w/ Thermotec cool-it mat. It worked well.
After all my experiments, I sold out and got an AEM CAI. The dyno proved that it was the best setup.
Check the link in my sig and go under 'modifications' for the stuff I tried in the past.

aluminum will shield the intake from the hot engine bay air until it gets heat soaked and will them warm up the intake air as well. I would recommend spraying the outside with ceramic high temp paint and get some sort of liner on the inside. That should do the trick nicely.
