Default Installing Skunk2 Stage 2 Camshafts

I just got a set of Skunk2 Stage 2 cams and my mechanic says due to the specs, it'll take him a full day to 'degree' the engine and that I have to pull it out (the engine) and take it to him.

Does this make sense timewise? What is 'degreeing'?

I don't know what the hell your machanic is talking about. Taking out the engine to put in cams is new to me. Also I'm not sure on what "degree" is.

I don't think it should take a day to install cams. Me and my friend did it in about 4 hours and we were farting around too. Consult another mechanic...
Peace

Find a new mechanic. This guy is nuts.

For domestic cams you have to install the cam in the middle of the block, meaning tilting the block out of the engine bay... you can get away without doing it on some of them. That's probably what your mechanic is talking about. Sounds like he's stuck in the '60s

Take a look at the Web Camshaft page for a description of why you should degree a new camshaft. < http://www.webcamshafts.com/degreeing.html > I have never done this but I just read it out of curiosity.

Find another Mechanic either he is stupid and dosent know your engine is an overhead cam, or he thinks your stupid and just wants to overcharge you. It took me 2 hours by myself putting my crower cam in my first time.

Screw him. What a dumbass.

It will take an Import Mechanic 2 hours to install cams and a Valve adjustment afterwards.

Not to hijack this thread... but you installed a crower cam ? What motor ? How do you like it ? Any good gains ?

Degreeing the cams is very important for peak performance. And it takes a looong time to do correctly.

Ok, but do you have to have the engine outside to do this?

this is getting really retarded really fast.

go to http://www.c-speedracing.com for cam install procedure

install for cams:
1. take off valve cover
2. take off cam plates
3. using an extension of I think a 14mm socket. align crank to TDC
4. when you put the cams in, the cams will only fit in correctly (not 180*) off when you push them into the distributor.
5. intall all the parts

of course cam install is more detailed than this.
but there is no nead to degree the cams. they will be properly setup (at 0*) when you put them into the distbutor. you will know just from looking at them in relation to how the cams sits in the head where the rockers are. there will be gaps of space between the valve rockers are the lobes of the cam.

take your car to someone who has done import car (hopefuly b-series) engines before.

taking your engine out is not needed. i would walk away the minute i heard that you need to take an engine out to install cams.

there is no common sense in this thread
