Theft protection ECU
I've heard that you can bypass the key protection by using a GSR ECU. Does anyone know if this is true? I've never looked at the ECU, but would it be possable to unplug it, pour superglue on it, and plug it back in? If a theif managed to get it out he would most like break it leaving the car unstartable. Ideas?
I heard this too. Asked the service manager at Crown and he denied it, but I dunno. He also said there's no need to cover the VIN as a thief wouldn't really be able to get another key made. Mine's covered. Better safe than sorry.
The second time my R was broken into the "eye witness" said they aproached the car with an ECU. The mechanics that replaced my ECU said a GSR ECU would work but fuel maps would be ignored... ? whatever.
Let me add that the ECU must match the imobilizer unit in the steering column. -or so I've heard.

The '00-'01 ITRs, as we all know, utilize an immobilizer. The immobilizer does not allow the car to start unless the correct key is used. The '00-'01 ITR ECU has the same plug style as the '00-'01 GS-R.
The '00-'01 GS-R ECU also has an immobilizer. The '00 GS-R ECU has the same ECU plug style as the '00-'01 ITR.
Therefore, plugging in a '00-'01 GS-R ECU will NOT allow you to steal the car any easier than the '00-'01 ITR ECU.
The immobilizer will NOT eliminate theft and is not that hard to defeat (unfortunately). It will only slow a thief down.
The immobilizer is very easy to defeat but I will not go into detail on it because the viewers of this board are not limited to honest hard working individuals. Anybody, including thieves, can view this board so I don't want to be helping them out.
The best thing to do is park your car in a garage and have a good alarm install. Kill switches are a definite plus. Ideally, you want your car's only method of being stolen to be towing it.

I agree. If its easy don't say how. But do tell us how to make it harder.
Is it just a module that plugs into a computer? I've never seen it. If so, would the superglue idea work?

I have no clue on what the 'superglue idea' is but it sounds like something some young kid made up.
The immobilizer can not be made to be more effective.
Kill switches for the ignition or fuel pump are the way to go along with a good alarm install. Hide them real well and a thief will have one hell of a time to steal your car. If done right the only way to steal your car is to tow it.

Hmm maybe this isnt a good topic to be discussing as we dont know who could be reading this and could be just giving out ideas to wanna be thieves who didnt know how to bypass the immobilizer
"The immobilizer can not be made to be more effective."
Not that it can necessarly be made more effective, but is there a way to keep if from being bypased, or make it harder to bypass?

Ok this is actually scaring me cause I just had my 01 GSR broken into and STOLEN right in front of my house last week
Damn!! Could Honda make it more easier to steal these cars...I thought when they came up with the idea of the immobilizer it was to safely keep the car from getting stolen and give peace of mind to the owner...
WTF????

Actually its worse, and also not as bad as you think... I did a little searching on the net, and found two sites that will sell car stealing tools. For Ford, Chrysler, GM, Nissan, and Toyota you can buy the master keys! Depending on which car there are different combinations, but for a saturn, one of 32 keys will open and start ANY saturn! I haven't seen that for Acura yet.
But the tools you can buy on the net to open cars is amazing! That thing about disabling the power unlock button on our doors is worthless with one tool I saw. You slide this thing into the side of the door, and another piece hooks onto the manual unlock button. They even had a picture of a honda door lock when they showed the device.
They also had Ignition Lock By-Pass Tools.
Its messed up. I never thought about it before, but if little dumb punk kids can do it, it must be easy as crap.
