My Spoon header should be in soon, So it may take a little time to put it on "with my job and all," But just as soon as I do I'll post the results...

Dave sells the Adjustable 4-2-1 ITR header that you see for $890. He sells the same version uncoated for $740. I had him leave the primaries and secondaries long so that I can trim them in the future. He also makes extensions that allow the header to be lengthened should I ever trim it too short. This is not a simple bolt-on affair. I had to have the block-tranny support slightly trimmed, extend both O2 sensors(14" & 12"), and significantly shorten my B-pipe. Was it worth the work...HELL YEAH!
As you guys have stated, I want the best for my ITR. I've been fortunate that I've seen this header progress thru early prototype stages to the current version. The results speak for themselves! B18CXR posted a comparison plot that killed his JDM 4-1. This was even with no tuning! I've discussed header design with Dave quite a bit over email and truly believe that for the price, I've got the best header I could get. The "high-end JDM" units are extremely nice, but I'm not convinced they are perfect for every application. Mugen designs a system primarily for OEM cam use. Spoon, Toda, and JUN all have designs for high-lift cams, but we all know that there are a lot of variables to take into account even considering that. For less money, I have a header that at the very least performs just as good as those and at the very best works significantly better with my set-up. This debate is always going to rage and everyone has an opinion. A few can substantiate there claims with plots and such, but lets face, that doesn't prove it is best for your needs. Something better is always going to come along and what is on top will always get pushed to the bottom. That is evolution! I wanted a header that I could pay for once and have it grow with my needs. The SMSP unit does that! So, take what I've said with a grain of salt. Yet, if you doubt me, email Dave < smsproducts@carolina.rr.com > and ask him about it for yourself.

Out of interest, what does SMSPRODUCTS make besides this header? How long have they been in the tuning business? Comparing their web site to SPOON, MUGEN, TODA, JUN, HYTECH, COMPTECH,... I was not impresses with their portfolio. How do you go from storage bins and candy dispensers to the best headers for the best engine on the planet?
Hey if it works it works I'm not knocking that but it does seem strange to me?
Regards,

As far as tuning experience vs. HiTech, Mugen, or Spoon....no, I can't say he has any top-notch teams or organizations running his stuff. In my book, that doesn't mean chit! What I do know is Dave comes from an engineering background and has dedicated a lot of time to his header development. He also has a cool lil' GT class Honda he races. I first came in contact with Dave's work through a friend's shop, J-Speed. He had built a side-exit header for Jamie's 1.8L NA race car. I got in contact with Dave from there and kept in touch with him as the ITR unit progressed. He has had his designs tested extensively by Larry at Endyn and by Jeff at ImportReview. Both have praised his work and Larry still does! Dave gave us (NC ITR owners) a sneak peek at what was to come by allowing Jack (B18CXr) to test the header vs his JDM. The results were impressive! What I know is what I've seen and the info I've gathered through conversations with Dave over the course of several months. A lot of trial & error has occured as is always the case with new designs. Endyn and HiTech have both talked about how making copy after copy of new designs is the only why to figure out what does an doesn't work! Dave is a lil' guy in the scheme of it all and he doesn't dispute that. Is he ever going to be as big as Mugen or Spoon, probably not! But, I do think he can make a pretty big splash in this little pond of imports that we hang out in. My dyno results hope to help substantiate that soon enough!
Keep up the good work Dave!

He should really think about getting his own web page. I am probably not the only one who has looked at the SMSPRODUCTS web site and said WTF?
Can't wait to see the results.
Regards,
Thanks for the kind words and support.
Chris will be getting the first 2-1/2" full mandrel bent cat back system I build here in the next few weeks. We are both excited about this and have talked alot about it. Chris has contributed to this first design also. You guys know how I like the word adjustable...... we just have to see what we can do on the first pass. But a lot of thought has gone in this one as well as a 2-3/4" system for the B20VTECs.
As for the web site a friend was going to do it but our relationship has been stress lately and I'm looking into other options. I guess the longer it takes, the longer it will be before I have to pass on those overhead expensives to my customers. The web site will be http://www.sms-products.com but BabyNSX I do like most things associated with candy.
One thing to remember is that a header is only one part of the equation. The reason an engine runs well or like crap usually can't be contributed to one part. You can buy all the best parts that money can buy (or at least you think they are since you paid so much for them) and if you can't tune them to work together you have nothing. Or if you can't drive, or if you can't hook up - you know what I'm trying to say as Larry Widmer says "The concept that the best cars and engines are all simply the best combination of compromises that can be assembled will be prevalent in everything you read." Read on his site.
