Hey man let me tell you about my experience w/ amsoil. Amsoil went to my school (UTI) and made this big presentation how they were the first company to offer synthetic oil and you you don't have to change the oil for a year and all this stuff so I went out and bought there 0w30 (which has the consistency of water) full synthetic oil that they guaranteed was good for cars that used 5w30. I used it in my b16 ef and within a few days the lost motion assembly in the head started making a rattling noise. I didn't realize it was the oil until a few weeks later when my friend put the amsoil in his prelude vtec. As soon as he started the car it did the same thing. He immedietly shut it off drained it and went back to mobil 1. The noise was still there on start up only for a couple weeks. Now i'm not saying that all of their stuff sucks but i'll never chance it again, i'll just stick with mobil 1.

I don't think any of those oils are any good. Stick to a well-known brand such as Mobil1.

I also graduated from UTI in Phoenix AZ which school are you going to Phoenix or Rancho Cucamongo?

Amsoil is for the careless and lazy MOBIL 1

That's a pretty ignorant answer. AMSOIL was developed much earlier than Mobil was. They were indeed the inventors of synthetic oil. Just because you see Mobil1 ads everywhere, doesn't mean it's a better oil. Do a little bit of research and read some data on different oils - don't recommend one oil over the other just because you like it's name more!

That's a pretty good answer, but people do have there opinions. Favorite oils is like favorite car companies. Dodge guys say they'll never drive Ford, vice versa and so on. I myself use Quaker state in my Sonoma 4X4, why, i have no clue. Maybe it was on sale that day, now i just stick with it. Now my wifes 2003 CRV i only use Honda oil in it. Just because 5w20 is a pain in the *** to find at Autozone or other automotive stores. When my ZC is done i plan on using Mobil1, i've done my research and it performs as goodd if not better than AMSoil and Royal Purple for less money. Just my .02, if you don't like it **** off!

I recommend you guys check out the oil drop forums at
http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi like the poster said.
There you will find many people that are extremely knowledgable about motor oils, motor oil analysis in a myriad of engines and applications. Any time there and you will learn that Shaeffers and Amsoil (among others) are among the best performing motor oils.

I would trust amsoil to my car, but not by their changing schedule. I would still change every 3-5k depending on driving. I think mobil 1 is great value and is what I use.

Amsoil is a Multi-level-marketing company just like amway or quixtar or excell. FVCK EM! First they will sell you oil then they will ask you to sell it for them!

BTW: I also went to UTI and phoenix and found it was the BIGGEST waste of time and money I could spend. Every student and teacher ragged on the crx all the time. Then I would go back to class and they would teach me about 40 year old motors and broke *** 4 speed trannies..

Mr. Young and burn in a firery car wreck for all I'm concerned! 15k for school and all they teach you is chevy 350's and ford 9 inch rear ends.

I learned more about cars, suspension, motors and theory in 8 months on H-T and doing my own swap than I did spending 9k and 9 months at UTI.

What got me to drop out was that fact that I went to ALOT of shops in the phoenix, scottsdale, mesa area and asked if they hired UTI grads and they said "No, we won't make that mistake again". NOT EVEN FIRESTONE wanted UTI grads!

Just because Amsoil is sold through multi level marketing doesn't mean they have bad oil. Just because Amway is a bad multi level marketing company doesn't mean that all these companies are bad. That's just ignorant.

http://www.Maxima.org has a huge oil analysis database. It contains baseline samples and different drain intervals. Amsoil consistantly does the best. Redline is a good oil that can also withstand longer drain intervals although not as long as Amsoil. Mobil 1 Supersyn is good oil. All Valvoline oils come out with horrible oil analysis. this includes their synthetics. Castrol Syntec is quite possibly the worst "synthetic" oil on the market. I quoted synthetic because it's only a group III oil. Group III oils use a petroleum base stock. Castrol GTX outperforms Castrol Syntec. Castrol GTX consistantly outperforms all the other conventional oils. You may have to register. Unfortunately http://www.maxima.org is down at the moment, but go their and check out the fluids and lubricants section. Other good forumns for info on oils include http://www.svtperformance.com
http://www.dodgetrucks.com

They have people that are very knowledgeable on oils. Even though Amsoil is the best, don't expect any oil to show hp gains. The Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 is the best oils for cars that recommend 5 or 10w-30. It is a 35,000 mile oil or 1 year, but oil analysis show it's good in Maxima's for about 20-25k with filter changes around 5-7k. I used the 0-30 in my civic with oil changes of 25k and accumulated 250,000 miles on 14 oil changes. I used shorter intervals the first couple of times. I sold it to a Honda Mechanic who tore the engine down before purchasing and he found literally no wear. I change it in my wifes Durango once a year and every 15k in my Maxima. Oil analysis shows I can go longer.

1FSTMAX, very informative post. Unfortunatly, I'm not a believer in leaving oil in that long. With the cost of a new vehicle or even a new engine, I feel it is worth my while and $ to change the oil more often. The filter changes do sound good, though.

Nothing beats your testimony, though. If it works, I can't argue it. For now, though, I'll change my oil every 3-5k running mobil 1 or maybe amsoil, since the price difference isn't tooooo much off. Thanks again, I appreciate it.

It was extremely difficult for me to trust the long drain intervals as well. I tried 5k then 7k then 10k and said, "what the hell". The bottle said 35k so I thought 25k would be fine. I never trusted the 12.5k filter changes so I stuck with 5-7k with either the Amsoil or Mobil 1 filter. The Mobil 1 and K&N oil filters are slightly better than the Amsoil. Both the K&N and Mobil 1 are made by champion Labs and are almost identical. I had oil analysis done 3 times after running 25k on my civic and blackstone labs reported everything was fine. The same with my Durango. Mobil 1 SuperSyn is far better than their TriSyn and they have narrowed the huge lead that Amsoil once had. The long drain intervals is the only reason that Amsoil has kept my business. If I switch brands, it'll be Mobil 1 and it'll for conveinience. I've dealt with several Amsoil dealers trying to get the best price and only one has ever tried to pursuade me into selling it. I told him I wasn't interested and he never approached the subject again.
