Default MAN, stupid rear brakes, pics inside please help!

Well front brakes went on great.. moved to the rear where i encountered the bolt.. Too tight to fit a socket in there, and i didnt want to chance it with vice grips so i went and bought the 12mm wrench.. started turning stripped it/ stripped agian, then again with vice grips, then again with heat + vicegrips.. this is really shitty.

What in the heck do i do now?

oh yea im gonna need a new one? thats if i can ever get it off where could i get one if i did get it off?

You can try hammering on the next step smaller socket. I am confused, what size is the bolt supposed to be? I thought it was 12mm. ... nevermind i just understood what you said (you used 12mm open wrench). is the brake line in the way? why not just take that off first then use ratchet with socket?

They sell caliper pins/bolts at places like autozone, orileys, or advance auto parts.

A closed box wrench may do the trick since you are dispersing the torque on six sides vs two...

There are some tools by craftsman that will take that off..maybe someone can post a pic. They are made for stripped bolts. have no fear!

I dont want to have to take the air lines off and flush teh brake fluid. has anyone ever gotten caliper bolts from autozone?

I was in a similar situation. This newbie mechanic-wannabe overtorqued that bolt and snapped the head off last brake job. Luckily I was able to get it out.

I got two replacements at Autozone for about 10 bucks for my '00 GSR

Is that a 1/4 in ratchet and sockets? there may be one of your problems

i dont know if you wanna try this...take a dremel and cut a groove to the head of the bolt and get a big **** flat head screw driver to it....you may not have enough torque to get it off tho...it the threads are not seazed up you can cut the heaf off the bolt and turn the rest of it out...

...not very great suggestions but maybe you will get desperate enough

If you get a socket or even a wrench try and use a 6 point, that way the load is spread out real good, those 12 points can really strip stuff up sometimes. I think I ended up using a open ended wrench on that particular bolt, both to loosen and to tighten.

And as suggested using a small cutting wheel and grinding a "flat head screwdriver" slot into it and maybe using a chisel for good leverage and load dispersion.

Oh ya and the damnenest thing, if your gonna replace the pads and stuff and you've never done it before. In order to get the piston to go back in, you have to use a [I used a chisel] and screw that + shaped piston back into it's bore. Man I didn't know that and I was pushing like a mug trying to get that thing to go back in. And its a tight *** fit, I actually ended up using one of the old half way worn pads on one side, just cause I couldn't get the new ones to fit.

if you can still get the CLOSED end of the box end/combination wrench to get on and hold w/o slipping used the closed end and if you need more torque connect 2 of them for more leverage...

I don't see how your vise grips aren't working.. either your not setting it tight enough or their some cheap branded ones.. you can also try a large channel lock since the head/bolt is stripped/needs replacement anyway... the torque spec isn't even that much for the caliper bolts... so it shouldn't be on that tight.. just get something that grips down hard and turn...

you can also try the bolt out/stripped bolt extractors... but thats $45 heh...

If you need to, file the down the bolt head on the flat sides so you can use the next smaller-sized wrench.

I really don't recommend this (b/c the wrenches are so expensive), but you can use a 12mm flare-nut wrench (aka line/pipe wrench), which grips on 4 corners and 3 sides. Use a small sledgehammer to give the wrench a tap to break it loose.

Thanks guys for all the help, ill try some of your suggestions out. The only problem is, i think the bolt might be frozen in there? because it just wont budge.
