setting up trunk and weight issues???
ok my plan is to lay a layer of mdf down...frame it out....then lay another thin layer over the framing...this way my two amps will be flush mounted on that board...the board will be carpeted..
just wondering if this idea is too much weight? any other ideas on how to make a nice looking flush mounted amp rack? I really want to do a nice job on it instead of must leaving them both on the backs of the seats

yeah I figured it would add weight no matter what...though I dont think it will be horrible...I will use the minimium thickness on the mdf and also frame it out so that it is sturdy but no heavy as all hell....I am also planning on having a cut in the mdf and hinging it so that I can lift the entire amp rack up easily to have access to my spare tire....
once I actually start this whole project and finish it I will make sure to take pics and I will post...probablly wont actually start the full building process until like 2 or three weeks...I want to gather materials and also pre cut the pieces for the trunk to make the whole install go as smooth as possible....plus I will need a weekend to lay the sound deading down before I even start the whole amp setup

Cool. I'm thinking about doing something similar, and I could use some ideas.I want a stealth install. I'm going to put the sub in the wheel well, and build a false floor to cover everything.
yeah I have seen that before...as long as you have cooling fans I have see installs where they have another layer of carpet that just covers the whole things so it looks like an empty trunk...only thing that I dont get is how the sub hits if its covered like that...who knows...
yeah my plan of attack is to pull the cover in the trunk that is there now...and use that as my template....

can i add a wise crack? lol
anyway, i always thought that the weight addition would be the same as stuffing all the material in your trunk, would it affect the weight/performance of the car more when stuck to the chassis/mounted? (serious question)
in other word when i buy the material and put in the car i always say 'but, this isnt slowing me down or hurting handling, so...'

well for the guys who are modding their cars and are looking for the big hp gains and also track times...this type of setup would never fly for them...too much added weight
yeah its a good amount of overall weight I guess....figure I will be sound deadening the entire trunk...door panels...headliner...as much as I can get to
then adding the two layers of mdf for the top and bottom of the amp rack I will build...plus the box with my sub and the amps.....

Depends on where you place the weight.
Mounting a sub in the wheel well should yield better performance than just throwing a box in back, because the weight is down lower (lower center of gravity).
IMO my car handles better with more weight in back, it keeps the rear planted.
Custom installs can easily add 150-200+ pounds.

Same thing with the deadening. The higher up it is the worse off your handling is. 200ish pounds will affect your acceleration reguardless of where you place it though.
yea I actually was thinking plywood would be a lot lighter....particle board I dont think is strong enough and will break apart over time...
