Default 4.785 Final Drive with LS 5th in 2000 GSR

What do you guys think if I were to throw a 4.785 final drive in the tranny, and swap out the gsr 5th (0.787) with an LS 5th (0.714).
My only motivation for this is that I drive the car daily 80 miles, highway, good gas mileage is a must. Right now the car cruises 80mph at 4k rpms.

I used the excel formula sheet, and if I were to just to swap the 5th gears, with the LS 5th, I would spin 3700rpms, but with the FD and LS 5th, its 4k, no change.

Only bad thing I see about this is that 5th gear will be a dead gear, just for cruising highway, but then again, thats what I need since I shouldnt be racing in 5th gear.

What do you guys suggest?

Well if you cruise the highway at 80mph, then you might like it. Personally, I would just keep the GSR 5th, because it is still longer than a B16A 5th gear. In terms of gas mileage though, the 5th gear swap won't be affected that much, maybe 1-3mpg.

If you gains 3 miles/gal with the LS 5th gear, that would mean you would save like $4 a week in gas with the amout of driving you do.

That's $200 a year in gas money (an average estemation).

So, now you have to decide if it is a worth while trade of.

Personally, I'm never accelerating in 5th, and i do almost as much daily driving (proabably 400 miles or so a week), so it is a good thing to look into.

So, now it just comes down to the extra cost and headache of putting it the LS 5th gear. (Not sure how much extra it would be) If it is less than $200, the LS 5th gear would pay for it's self and be saving you money within the first year.

For a 400mi+ daily driver... I don't think it is a bad idea at all. It is definitely something that I'm going to look into when I get around to putting an LSD and FD in my tranny.

I'm running the JDM FD on a Type-R transmission...I did not see a noticable difference in gas mileage, I get ~24mpg in the mountains, and ~26-28mpg on the highway for long trips, although I get better mileage at times when I'm not so heavy footed.

What tranny are you putting this in? Give me that, your tire size, and your redline and I'll post up a graph of exactly what your car will be doing at different speeds.

just keep the gsr 5th.

I have itr tranny with 4.929 fd along with gsr 5th gear

I would get the itr 5th if possible.

gas mileage isnt noticable difference. with my new rebuilt motor and tranny I get 30mpg easy driving 4.7krpm on the freeway (83~mph)

keep the gsr 5th.

ls is too much of a difference
