Default Make your own shift light?

I'm not quite sure where to put this topic so I put it here. I am pretty good with electronics and I was wondering how hard it would be to make my own shift light. I dont like the look of a big tach and or shift light up on the dash and want to make my own LED style. I found some LED style hidden ones but they are pretty expensive. I thought about modding a shift light and just using the internals. If anyone knows anything about making shift lights or what the tachometer signal is like / how a tachometer works any information would be great. I'll keep you guys posted on how everything is working out.

I think its MSD that has an "RPM activated switch". You hook that up to your car and then to an LED and bingo.
