Need purchase advice on 95 GSR
130k on black GSR.
never replaced timing belt or water pump (!!!!!!)
fluids maintained well, but still on original plugs/wires/cap/rotor/waterpump/timingbelt/belts
I dont think it has ever had a valve adjustment (but no valve noise)
original clutch (!!!!)
$5k
potential problem I noticed on the testdrive: the temp gauge stays at cold. When I took it to redline a couple gears, it went up about 1/4. Is that normal? Possibly bad thermostat? gauge?
I offered him $5k before I knew about the timing belt/water pump and clutch.
$5k is a good bit more than I originally planned to pay for a 2nd car, so I only want to get this if it is a smokin deal.
what do you guys think?
would $5k be a good deal considering I will have to pump $300 into it right away in basic maintenence and another $300 for a clutch soon?

go get a estimate for the timing belt/tune-up and clutch replacement from a dealer and show it to the seller and bargain it down a bit....emphasize the importance of the timing belt and the maintenence and work off of that....
personally, i wouldn't pay more than $4k...

That sounds like a decent deal if it's still in good mechanical and aesthetic condition. ****, I payed 5700 for my GSR and it had more miles than that. I would definitely look into getting the belts changed and the water pump as well. How does the clutch still grab? If it grabs fine, I wouldn't worry about it, just don't abuse the hell out of it. My stocker went after about 10k miles of me driving it, and it was the original. A spring popped off of the clutch disk and lodged itself between that and the flywheel, what a mess.
Also, how far did you drive the car when the temp needle didn't move? My GSR takes forever to warm up and read normal operating temp.

The car is for a dedicated track car (road racing, not drag) and will be a future race car, so it will definately be driven hard.
The problem with trying to talk him down is that he already thinks he is giving me a smokin deal. looking up the car on kbb, it looks like pvt party value is $5200. not bad, but no smokin deal.
clutch grabs ok i guess. not nearly as grabby as my wrx though. as for abusing it, thats not an option
i drove the car for 15-20min, relatively hard - took it to redline a few times. what was odd was that it wasnt like it just took a long time to warm up, the temp gauge would go up a little when driving hard, then go back down all the way to the left to C. is that typical? In normal operating temp the needle should be in the middle correct?

You bastige! I'm looking for the same thing! However, if they the major maintenance done who's to say they got the easy stuff done? I wouldn't risk it, car sounds like trouble waiting to happen.
It's prolly just a bad thermostat stuck open. I had a similar problem shortly after I bought my 95 GSR. I ran my car pretty hard and after a few hwy runs at 120mph+ the thing was below the normal startup point and there was condensation frost on my intake. LOL You could put your hand on my vlave cover for minutes and it wouldn't burn you. Oh well.
I say go for it but get all the maintaince done. Offer him 4K cash out the door. I doubt he'll pass that up.

i bought my gsr like a month ago with 107 k miles on it and know its giving me all kinds of trouble and costing me alot , i thought that i got a smoken deal but not anymore ....def. get it checked out
I've spent some money trying to maintain my GSR.
For some odd reason the Timing belt borke at 70K miles. BROKE!!! Soooo I had to get that **** fixed. $350
Tow fee $40
My brakes fucked up and I couldn't fix them myself (now I can sine the shop corrected the problem) $350
I think I spend about $25 bux in mobil 1 every 2500-3K miles for oil. I dont think that much is wrong with my car. I got a small valve tick tho.
Needs hella valve adjustment. Other than that she's mechanically sound. I love her.
I think that's about it.

I would offer no more than 4500. Timing belt is something that should be done on that car ASAP and that will run at least 600$. Not to mention the all the other wear items that needs to be replaced like spark plugs, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, valve adjustment, tranny fluid, brake fluid...ect. Make sure to check the radiator because Integra radiators are prone to leak. That is another 300$ easy if it's leaking. Basically, the more things you point out that the car needs repaired the better. Also be sure to do a compression check on the engine. HTH
Edit: Also the thermostat is probably stuck open like was said earlier. After the car is warmed up the guage should stay steady a little under the halfway mark. It's an easy fix but another thing to mention to the seller.
