How to port a Throttle Body
Well I got bored the other night so I decided to go mess around in the garage.
first take off the throttle body from the car (if you dont know how dont try this at home) then get the tools

1- either an air compressor and air rotary tool (works faster IMO) or dremel tool
2- several buffing bits (disc cutting bit, sand paper, cloth and wire brush)
3-and the KILLER (make sure to get this bit)

4-table and vice
so to get things off to a start =
1-putt the butterfly into wide open throttle (notice: how it sits sideways/ restict air flow)
[IMG]http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wNzIxNDg2czQxM2RmZDMxeTU0MQ%3D% 3D[/ IMG]
well we need to fix this so get the disc and cut here

like this

so you are going to cut away at the piece of aluminum that restricts your throttle position until the butterfly will sit flat inside the intake tube (letting the air pass through with NO disruption)
2-now to play with the big guy

MAKE SURE TO SUCRE THE TB TO A TABLE OR SOME THING!
and wear safety goggles metal shavings will go every where!
so once the throttle body is secured down start the rotary tool and go around the walls of the intake tube in a circular motion (clock wise or counter clockwise)
until you take off as much as you want

3- once satisfied with your porting start to buff it out all smooth like a snot on a door **** (alot of people differ in opinion on how to do this but) I used the little sander cyclender and went around the walls with a course grit on to smooth out the rough stuff then with a fine to get it even smoother
4-then I get the wire brush disc and smooth out the side walls some more

making it look like this

then the last with the clothe bit and some aluminum pollish to make it BLIING BLING and as smooth as possible!
note: the smoother the walls get the better air flows = MAKE IT AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE!
So good luck / have fun and dont F*c!< it up!
(I take NO reponsibility to what you do or dont do to your car so BECAREFUL!)
oh and sorry for some of the fuzzy pics

couldnt tell you its a B20 Tb? but when I did my ITR TB it went from 62mm-67.8mm
(once I did this I raced my friend with is ITR and pulled about 3 cars on him form this modd alone)
you can reduce the throttle blade but I dont have an extention (lowes and Home Depote dont sell them!) to do so
but if you want to get me one I can do it and post how to do that

so it is actually tapered until it hits the butterfly? At the butterfly it would still be the original size im guessing unless u made a new butterfly and ported through there also correct?
Im interested in doing this but just want to make sure its wortwhile.
Let us know how it works on the *** dyno. and no placebo effects

the *** Dyno did notice a difference (like putting on a cold air for the first time)
it does taper down by the butter fly
but I also smoothed it down around the butterfly with a wire brush
I know this isnt the best thing you can do but (such as a spoon TB or having your done by a pro)
but I wanted to show you guys how to do this yourselves with VERY common tool and not alot of cash
so weight the cash/benefit and fun
EX= SPOOM Tb $450/15HP (no idea real hp gain?)
do it yourself $30 (in new bits)/ 10 HP and knowing you did it yourself

Good how-to!
: :
i agree you may even lose horsepower .
i kinda doubt 10 whp from a throttle body change on a NA motor, unless the stock unit was HIGHLY restrictive.
i agree you may even lose horsepower .
the 10 HP thing was just an exaple (I have no idea reall HP gains) as stated in ()
I really doubt it is 10 HP I was just saying figuarativley so I could have a comparisson saying that it does NOT make as much HP as reaplacing the whole butterfly assembly and all that (man you guys are taking this crap way too seriousley! If you want to do this mod great! if you dont then dont! I really could give a flying F#C!< either way! I was mearly giving some dirrection to those who might be interested in a cheap mod and would like to do something themselves instead of buying it off the shelf)
as for a loss in HP I can garantee that if you do this mod correctly it will give you a hoarse power increase! it also helps if you have some sort of intake on your car to help with flow aswell! if it does not give you a HP increase then why would spoon sell ported TB's for so much money when spoon dosnt specialise in turbo cars

I would think that when you really do a porting on a TB you want it to be the entire way through. So you need a new butterfly and usually port match it to the IM. Tapering it might focus air some, but cant see to much of a real effect here.
Throttle bodies only add horsepower if they don't open enough to allow all the air that the engine needs in.
The main reason for a larger throttle body is increased throttle response....not horsepower.

it helped with throttle respounce as well as horse power
but then again all you have to do to improve throttle responce is tighten your throttle cable!
but I promise this made a power increase
If I had a Dyno I would have donea B4 and after, but I dont. so you are going to have take my word for it or dont and dont do it. But I feel that I am an honest person and I stand by what I do to my car.
again to restate
THIS MOD WILL NOT INCREASE THE SAME AMOUNT AS A BIGGER TB WITH BUTTERFLY BUT FO THE BANG FOR THE BUCK VALUE IT IS WORTH IT I.M.O.
SO TAKE IT FOR WHAT IT IS!

For those of you with a z6/y8, another option is to just get a b/h-series throttle body. I picked up a 60mm GSR TB for my y8 for $36 shipped on ebay. I'm not too big on the home porting on something that requires this type of precision. If you have access to a shop and the right tools, then go for it.
so what happens when u bore it out around the butterfly..will the butterfly become too small for the bore causeing air to get threw around the outside edge even when its closed .?

everyone needs to just F@#*ing chill out. look, we (ITRacer121 and I) ported out my throttle body after we did it to the B20 TB. it works. trust him. he isn't gonna try stuff on his or my car unless its worth it. my throttle response is way better and, it feels good that i didnt spend $100 bucks for mine(LMAO)!!!!! so jsut take it for what it is or get over yourself
no one is getting hostile, weare just asking simple questions. before people do such modifications to their cars, they ask questions. you guys posted this mod, so be ready for questions and concerns. simple as that. people just want to know. it seems like you are getting mad cuz people just want some figures.
as far as it cleaning up throttle response and making a little power. i do not doubt it, but all i ever did was question the 10 hp figure, but he cleared that up by just pointing out that it was all for relative terms in comparing the money/gain ratio compared to high dollar units.

Good how-to though! Well done.
