why do my speakers sound like crap?
well im kinda new at this sound system stuff, but i have some jensen 6x9 and when i turn it up loud it sounds like all shaky. But its not even that high. Then i have some 300 w jbl 6x9 and i put those in, and it sounds the same. Can you help me out? I dunno what the problem is. Thanx for any help
sounds like you're clipping the deck out...
your deck's power supply can only offer so much power to your system... especially when you're running 6x9's. larger speaker = more power required to move them. as you crank the volume, you are putting a bigger load on that puny little power supply. as the power supply reaches it's limits, the power starts cutting out, creating the clipping noise coming from your speakers.
solution:
only decent way to get excessively loud music without hearing crap is to buy an amp. amps have a bigger, better power supply that can handle the bigger demand.
alternative:
if you can't shell out the money for the amp and everything involved with it, buy a deck with a MOSFET power supply. a MOSFET supply has a faster discharge/recharge rate so you won't notice the clipping issues as much.. it's not a perfect fix, but it's usually cheaper.
at work (best buy) we sell a pioneer with a MOSFET supply for about $140.
hope that helps.
