How long will a bad CV joint last?? Any guesses...
So my right CV joint has been clickin around corners and I can faintly feel it when I'm driving down the highway. I've only had this 92 hatch for maybe 2 weeks so I really can't say when it started. The boot it torn so I'm sure the grease is pretty much gone. Its a stock joint by the way (1992 VX) My Question - Do they last awhile before completely breaking? What happens when they break? Does the joint snap and axle fall out or something. And I will be able to at least drive it somewhat if that happens?
I will get a new one probably soon and will wait to drive it till then, but I wanted to know a little more. Thanks

mine been clicking loudly for about 3-4 months now. I don't drive it everyday...and I realize I'm running on borrowed time, but it hasn't gone yet...*knocks on wood*
your taking a gamble right now, the question you gota ask yourself is, how badly do you mind getting your car towed? They can pretty much go at any time, i drove around for a couple weeks with mines, yet Wiz's didnt click at all and one day at work he pulled out his parking spot to go to lunch and his axle fell apart.
same here. mines been click for about 2 or 3 or more months. after reading the "how bad do you mind getting your car towed", i feel its time to get it replaced right now. how much does the cv cost to get replaced?

well i look at it this way, if its clicking and boot is torn, its going to have to be replaced right? so why not replace it now and skip the risk of being stranded somewhere. axles go for about 90 bucks give or take 10 bucks, go to autozone, lifetime warranty

Man you guys are cheapskates...............just go get a new cv boot repair kit from Checker ($14) and fix it before it completely fails the joint. It's not THAT hard.

Usually a cv joint goes "bad" when it is run without grease for a period of time (ie: there's no lubrication) usually due to the boot tearing and loosing all the grease. So if you here clicking noises (usually on turns) that would indicate that the joint is without grease and if run that way for some time will eventually fail. Like I said before, spend the $14 and fix it before it fails completely.
where can you buy the cv boot repair? and what exactly is it? do i need to remove the whole suspention to the outside of it to repair it or can i just lift the car?

I'm running a B16 in my '89 Civic HB and using '90-93 Teg axles. Checker Auto Parts has the inboard and outboard cv joint boots with grease and rings. It's all there in a kit. Tell them what car based upon what axles you are using. I said '90 Teg and they gave me the kit. Yes, you will have to jack up the side that needs replacing and removal of the lower ball joint from the knuckle is necessary, as well as removing the lower shock bolt. Basically you need to separate the lower control arm from the lower shock fork wide enough to pull your axle through.
Anymore questions? Just ask.

I had an 87 CRX. The boot went bad and it started clicking. I drove it for 2 years like that before the timeing belt gave way and put her in the junk yard. The car had countless problems with it and I decided that I was not going to waste any more money on it. I drove her till she couldnt take it any more. I am very carefull with my 90 Rex. If they started to click I would fix them. It all comes down to how long you plan to keep the car.
shoot, just take your axle out and go get one with a lifetime warranty from kragen or autozone, whatever place you want... then every time after that just just take yours out and go get a new one... I think with the core they run between $50 and $60 per side.

yea i need to replace my cv boot SOON lol, i wud also like to see exactly how much it would cost to get it done. OR how hard would it be to do it myself.
hey, i have a b16 in my 88dx hatch...the motor was out of a 91 jdm integra xsi....i had the motor put in, but forgot to ask what axles they used. Which replacement axles am i supposed to get to replace them? i have a torn CV boot. thanx
I just re booted my buddies 99 civic si today. It took about an hour (just passenger side inner needed) And the kit cost him 24 bucks through honda (my discount). Its easy. As long as there not clicking, you can reboot them. If they click, just replace the whole axle. Ryan

Do I need to give you guy's a step-by-step 1-2-3 etc etc guide on how to pull an axle? Even a $10 Chilton's will give you instructions. What I described before was, in a nutshell, basically what needs to be done. Read my earlier post.
you might want to get it fixed asap....i drove on mine for about 4 months one time in my corolla....the vibration ended up killing my wheel bearing...AND hub...the whole thing cost me hundreds to fix....big headache...i should have just fixed the damn boot 6 months before when i saw that it was ripped...
mine was clicking for a while and it completely fell apart one day when i was tryin so leave my school...it doesent help that i have a stage 1 clutch and i was tryin to smash out...but i stopped right there and had to have aaa come and get me...it was kinda embarrasing and funny at the same time...
I drove on 2 bad cv joints for like 6 months w/o any problems. I then went and bought some with lifetime warranties and antoehr one went bad not too long ago went and picked it up took out the bad one put in the good one and returned it in a matter of 2 hours.
Oh and just another thing to think about, if its clicking its bad getting a new boot isnt going to fix that you will need a new axle.

CVs will go like 5 months max after they've broke, less if you live somewhere where there is a lot of dirt, rain, snow, or things that will destroy the joint faster. I did my own axel replacement. Its not hard. Hardest part was getting the axel out of the knuckle since it (I guess) rusts itself in sort of. Go to Sears and get a Big Gear Puller and just attach it to the hub, pin on the axel, crank it and the axel will pop right out, amazing tool to have. Took me like 5 hours to replace the axel but that includes the time sitting around trying to figure out how to get the axel out of the knuckle, the trip to sears, and all that that entails.
Oh yeah axel was like $100 but I got $50 back when I brought in my dead axel. So for $50 and 2 hours of your time there is no real excuse not to do it.

Well, this is the deal. The car will most likely have an engine swap later this summer. I was planning on driving it some before that though to save some miles on my newer civic. Plus the hatch is kinda fun to drive - even unmodded.
I'm gonna get another axle. I posted in the classifieds about anyone with extra axles and I got a few replies, but no one sends pictures or details. They just want me to send money! Maybe I'll just say screw that and get one from autozone with no worries. $50 is nothing.
Thanks alot guys - I appreciates it!
