whats the diff. 98GSR and 99GSr cluster

just like it say's, what the diff???? will the 99 work in the 98, or not? thanks

i was just told that the 98 cluster works using an analong,eletric signal, and the 99 and up use a digital signal. meaning, that a 99 cluster will not work in a 98. does this make sense?
if this is not true please let me know...
