cv axle... replace myself?
My brothers 94 accord needs both cv joints replaced... 275 done, or 150 for parts and i do it for him.... who has done this and how hard is it? anybody got some instructions for me? i'd like to save him the money.
its pretty easy to change the axles on an accord all you need is a 35 mm soket for the center nut and a flat head to wiggle the axle off the tranny. if you got any ? just email me.

i've got a repair manual for my 4th gen prelude which gives instructions to remove/install cv axle which i'm pretty sure i can follow/figure out... any special tools needed? and exactly how easy is it to screw up the ball joint or put unneeded stress on the axle??
pretty easy
get some wire and tie the axle up once you get it in the transmission and half shaft
I will emphasize that you do not want to pull the bearings out of the cup when installing
as far as the ball joint just easily swing the knuckle out of the way and wire that up also
you will need a 36 mm socket/big *** braeker bar for the axle nut and a ball joint seperator, thats about it

WRONG........... you have to remove the bottom ball joint and swing the knuckle out of the way without screwing up the ball joints. Then remove the old axle, and insert the new one without seperating it or putting uneeded stress on it

its really not that hard.....u need a 35 mm socket for the big nut. basic toolset for the rest....also would help to have 2 prong fork thingy to separate the tierod, upper and lower joints. got that from autozone for 15 bux...might let u rent it for free. hint for driver side reassembly.....i had to use my floor jack to push up the hub/strut assembly to get my driveaxle through the hub....you'll see what i mean
I have never heard of pushing up on the hub with a jack
No, a ball joint splitter is like a fork/wedge that you bang with a hammer to separate the ball joint. This can damage Honda ball joints. They are not designed to be separated. This is called a pitman arm puller and works much better. Put it on the ball joint crank it a few times with a socket and POP the ball joint comes right out...
I bought my ball joint puller from jcwhitney.com . I used it on every ball joint associated with accord suspension. It works great for $17.99. Or if you are cheap you can rent one from autozone. Putting them in is pretty straight forward, just torque the nut to spec.

WHOOPS! I did mine with a crow bar and a hammer. Do accords have longevity problems with their ball ends? Maybe I should fix those seals I broke soon.
I didnt remove the ball joint when installing the new engine.
Removed 1 17mm control arm bolt attached to the frame
Removed the 17mm bolt that attaches the lower control arm to the strut
Removed the 2 17mm bolts on the suspesion bar thing toward the front of the car
Removed the 1 12mm bolt on the rear sway bar.
This allows the axle to be free enough to come out of the tranny without using the above tool or the possibility of damaging the ball joint.
