Default Auto-X helmet fitment ?

I'm getting ready to start auto-Xing my car this sping/summer. As I'm looking at which helmets to buy I'm finding that the motorcycle helmets are the most affordable. And from the other posts that I searched, it looks like I need to shop for a Snell rating of either M or A and a numerical rating of 90 or higher.

I've found two helmets that I can afford and meet the rating criteria, but am on the boderline of helmet sizes. I measured my head and it is 22.75"

The medium size supposedly fits 22 1/4" - 23"
The large size apparently fits 23 1/8" - 24"

Do you guys find that a helmet that fits snugger or looser is more comfortable? I don't want to buy a helmet and have it be uncomfortable in the 100+ degree Arizona heat!

From your measurements, it looks like the Medium would work fine. If possible, its a good idea to try a helmet on ahead of time. I know its not always possible, but just something to think about.

If you are looking for SM rated helmets for autocross, go to a motorcycle shop and try on the various helmets - it will help out a lot to figure out which ones fit to your head best (different brands fit differently). HJC or KBC helmets are good cheap SM rated helmets for autocrossing.

BlueTeg, our region does a group buy on helmets every few months; I think they're under $75 or so. They're exactly the same as the loaner helmets we provide at events, so you could try those on and see how they fit.

Thanks for the input guys, as always, its appreciated.

Caffeine Slug: Cool. I'll look into that but I think I found a pretty good buy on a helmet that I can have shipped to my door for under $80. Are you going to AMP on 4/13/03?
