Default Spy report on Derek Butts' DSP IS300

Last Sunday I was at a local Porsche Club of America event when I was supprised to see somone trailering in an IS300. Imagine my suprise when I found out it was Derek Butts DSP IS300. This was the firt time the car has been out for testing. Upon inspection of the car it has headers, exhaust, advanced design coilovers (800f/500r), aftermarket rear swaybar, custom front swaybar, fender flares, racing seats, and huge 285/30/18 Kumhos on SSR comps.

The car did well that day but they said the car was pushing badly and bottoming out the front shocks a lot.

Right now it's not as fast as the Capri but mighty impressive for only 4 weeks of build time.

Looks like whitney picked the right year to take his beemer to nationals...

285/30-18! Those are some big tires! A little width to go with a little 'bling.'

Damn...285s

What's next? Someone will show up with 335s on an E36 328...

Did you ever consider going to a wider/taller tire on the GSR? Say a 245-45-16. I theorize that the extra grip may just outweigh the other inherent disadvantages of such a setup... The GSR afterall, is not exactly a slouch in the HP department...

Hmmm...

no spy pictures? how about a website that has the results and possibly pictures?

285 is a lot of frickin tire and since they are willing to cut the fenders of relatively new IS300 and spend $$$ on tires, I can only assume they are not lacking in funds and will therefor be throwing a lot of money at the power side of things too...I bet they'll feel silly when I spank them on my 225/13s

I'm sorry for the lack of spy photos. I wasn't expecting to see as IS300 at a PCA event. You have to get special permission to run a non-porsche. For the record it's a beautiful pearl white.

I'll post a link to the results of the event when they're up. It's hard to compare the results because there wasn't another car prepped to SP SCCA rules to compare it too. The best comparison you can make is when Andy McKee drove both the DSP IS300 and a BS Boxster.

Geratol,

More information......

Derek & his crew, said they did have problems early in the day. But I thought after lunch the crew, made some adjusments, and the thing was turning times 1.5 to 2 seconds faster. For some hard data

TTOD (SM Champ) J. Reitmeir 924s (i think) 42.9xx
Dereks best time 43.5xx
(BS Champ) Andy McKee in BS Boxster 43.5xx 43.8xx

Results should be posted http://lpr.pca.org/source/autocross.html

Geratol and XrcR6 did very good driving the Boxster!

GOOD LUCK at National Geratol.......god speed to ya!

BoxsterPaul.

D*mn, this guy must have some serious bank. S2k, truck & trailer, and now a DSP IS300.

Guess you'll get to go against him head to head soon enough in San Diego (good luck ). Don't know if it's permanent, but looks like Ron Bauer (330) and McCormick (miata) aren't driving their type Rs. It would be sad if it is.

Did I forget to mention that Lexus of America is one of his sponsors? Hmm, I think I did.

Yeah seems like the people with bank gets the sponsors. Wasup with that? But seriously, if he sucked at driving, I doubt he would get that sponsorship.

Bah, it's just a ****-can Toyota. Those cars suck. He'll probably hit a dumpster on his first run or something. No match for the Ultimate Driving Machine. I can whip his *** on 185-75-15 Uniroyal TigerPaws, which, I have heard, is the hot setup for nationals this year. The excessive flex and lack of grip of the skinny *** tires gets the heat built up really quick so they're at temp right away. Tell Derek I said so.

I think I saw it last night driving through S San Fran/Colma. A white IS300 with SSRs on a trailer. Are we going to start a site for sightings? Sounds like DS is going to be interesting this year.

Nice car.

Like the DeAnza autox, where are the pointer cones? Looks like a sea of cones. Maybe I'm missing something.

You know once he gets the car tuned, he'll be on hoosiers. $263/each @ tirerack. Cha-ching.

Sure, I'll probably go, especially if you need another whipping boy for your power.

Want to start a DSP trash talking thread? I'm all about that. Let's get Butts over here. Woah, that was funny.

Woohoo!

Yeah that must of been it. The car is DSP not DS.

Yeah, those PCA guys don'y know how to set up a course. The cones come in two different sizes for no reason and many of them should have been tossed long ago. They don't do a chalk outline wich isn't to bad because thy line the course with a cone every 2-3 feet.

Geratol,

Pleeeeeeeze, the PCA only sets them up differently, style if you will. You are just spoiled because you belong to a region that can buy a whole truck load of cones every couple of years. I would bet the small SCCA regions/chapters, cones look very similar to the LPR-PCA. At least they put on events.....

You don't need chalk....you don't need pointer cones...these are for people that are not looking/planning ahead.

I, in fact like slaloms without pointer cones, letting me choose the hopefully faster line. Which, you, XrcR6 and I did at this event! Most every slalom for the PCA are entry optioned...whereas with the SCCA its rare to have entry option.

Bottom line enjoy the differences, and learn how other clubs do it...take what you like and try too integrate it, ie (DNW posting , Registration cutoff , slalom entry option , 12 runs a day )...and leave the rest...

Thanx

BoxsterPaul

I'm just trying to say that the PCA needs to pitch in a few bucks and get some cones that are all the same size and aren't on the verge of tearing in half.

Don't give me any excuse about how they can't afford new cones either .

I do like that they have optional slaloms (something I wish the SCCA region would do more of).

Maybe I should just shut up and enjoy the 12 runs.... NAH!

Ran my Type R at one of our local Porsche club autocrosses. Course was real long at like 75+ seconds, and had a long slalom that was 10-12 cones long. The weird thing was how narrow the course was (could barely fit the R thru in spots) and how sharp the turns were (90 degree turns after long fast straights). And yea, no pointer cones anywhere, but I didn't mind that much.

Hmm, last time I ran a Porsche club event was in my CRX (that goes to show how long ago it was... ). After it was over, they asked that I not come back to another event. They did not like that I beat them all by nearly 2 seconds. Oh well, some people get a little too wrapped up in it. I laughed loaded up and have not been back.
