What do people mean by an open header?

 

No cat, no exhaust pipe = friggen loud

 

meaning that the cat and b-pipe are off the car when running it.

VTEC IS cRAZY

 

I ran open header on my ITR for the last few weeks I owned it. That is crazy loud. It feels like you are not even moving below 4k rpm after vtec kicks in it is a rush! Way too loud for the street though. I thought for sure I was going to get a ticket!

 

You'll obviously throw the CEL... with no O2, will it cause the car to run too rich/lean or anything?

 

The car will throw a CEL but it didn't effect performance at all.

 

It's only throwing a code for the secondary O2 sensor. You car tunes off of the first one so you are fine in that sense.

Back when my car had the stock exhaust manifold unhooking it at the track bumped my trap speed 2-3mph.

 

I cant imagine how load vtec would be without the exhaust. I know some people around here that run sohc civics like that and they are crazy loud. I would not like having no power below 4k though. that would suck.

 

if you run open header too much it will burn up valves for the strip im sure its fine , but i wouoldnt do it long on the street

 

Ask some of the ECHC folks if they've burned up any valves with their open headers.

 

i tried it. it didn't even feel faster in vtec. it's probably because it was too loud for my brain to realize it was faster. plus i was too worried about waking up china when i did at 2pm here.

 

Make sure you throw a towel over the end of the header when ur done using it. One way to prevent burnt valves.

It won't hurt the car, but it will hurt your ears, your head, your neighbors ears, etc. The whole car will feel like it is vibrating/buzzing. It's pretty crazy. Vtec xover is.... scary loud.

 

You may notice yourself bleeding from the ears, but that's about it

 

Anybody at Expo '02 knows how loud open head can be Its freakin loud. Had to take it into town to get gas too. The locals did not seems to happy when they looked at me

Its actually quieter that w/ stock cams. My friend has Toda B's and valvetrain in his ITR and we were both open header. His sounds really cool idling but when we got on it, mine was louder and im stock. Cams make the exhaust sound different, but the db level is lower overall.

And fwiw, you don't lose power anywhere in the rpm band. I've already proved that on the dyno. Maybe it just "feels" like you don't have any power under 4k, because of the noise... but it's stronger everywhere. NO LOSS IN POWER.
