synthetic oil to conventional
it is safe... but why would you want to? If you change your oil often then Dino oil is ok... but if you can afford to go with synth then do it.... Walmart always has some sort of sale on...
anyhow that is my 0.02$

My mechanic (who is an ex-honda dealers mechanic) said that it is not good to switch back to regular oil after using synthethic!
If he wants to use conventional oil, let him.
-Dave, who will never put a drop of synth in any motor again.. even with 7500mile+ oil changes in some of them.

it's BS. a number of people here alone have switched with the only result being less oil use in cases were oil use was a bit much before.

Please no flames... I am just asking a question, based on the info I have read and questions I have asked of others with more experience then I...

Why use synth? None of my motors have hurt from cheap dino oil. I've had high mileage toyotas, rotaries, isuzus, GM cars and a low mileage (65k) honda that has never seen a drop of synth in any of them.
The car I did put snyth in currently has a spun bearing.
Where is this data anyways?
-Dave, who waits for jond to post the flash point chart again

BMW did alot of research into synth oil a few years back and from what I read they suggested not going back to conv oil in high milage cars. Also, synthetic oil is far supperior than conventional oil to breakdown. However, synthetic would be pointless for a car that never sees the track, but it is worth having in high performance cars that see alot of abuse.
Well, seeing as that my oil temp never reached crazy temps (even in FL with the AC on), and definately not high enough to cause breakdown or flashing, I don't see synth having a real-world benefit there. Yes, technically most synths do have higher flash points and such, but does it matter when they aren't reached anyways?
Before I switched to synth in my boosted car it didn't even have any such problems, my little n/a 1.8l honda motor certainly wont.
But as you said, it is "your car", use what "you want". The posted asked if it was ok to switch to dino oil, we said yes. I didn't start the anti-synth or anti-dino part of the thread.

Maybe I just have some freak motors that get along fine with conventional oil. Whatever, it works for me and let's me waste money where it might make a difference
I'm sure you could dig up temps for oil breakdown, but I don't have that much time on my hands
From my point of view synthetic oil is just a little added insurace for cars that are pushed to the limits very often, from the car that sees the occasional track even to Realtime cars. Some people can justify the extra cost, while others can't.

Do what you want, but I made the change back to regular non-synthetic and I now burn less oil & it runs better IMO. I love the regular shat... Castrol GTX

After going to Mobil 1 and Catrol synthetics I started burning oil where before I never did with Dino oil. My next oil change will be moving back to dino, works almost as well and lighter on the pocket book.

It's def cheaper though to get Dino and works just as well IMO.
