RE: ApexI N1 pillow mounts
So today was the 3rd annual apex garage sale. Got there about 10am and left about 1:45pm. I couldn't find the previous thread that the pillowball mounts were discussed in but I promised that I would post some pictures and comments when I got them.
Some general info... these are the newer style ones, part number 256-H001 compared to the older 255-H001. The apex representative told me that these were designed to allow more suspension travel because you don't have to use the extra place holders for the springs that are required with the older red styled mounts, and also that they made things quieter. This was new information to me, I though that the mounts were just to take stress off the shock mount because of the tapered/conical design. The newer mount has a lip on the bottom so that it can guide the spring, so you don't need those extra place holders that I mentioned above. The kit also comes with new washers for the centering of the shock.
What's weird was that the apex rep told me that they usually sell the mount kit w/ the new tapered design for the fronts and use the red flat ones for the rear. He said this works well. I'm going to be running the conical design all around, so if anyone of you in the future try this, maybe post a review or something with the mixed setup.
This is a picture of them on the shocks that I grabbed off ebay, not mine.

Notice the lip on the bottom of the mount to center the spring.

.....he told me **** was selling like hotcakes, so I didn't get any springs either.
But the springs are cheap anyway, so no biggie.
Anybody wanna sell me their stock 99 spec n1 front springs?
Oooooh! So you got a set, eh Ed?
I can't wait till I get my set!

So we never got a definitive answer anyway from people running the 99spec n1 coilovers... which people were tearing the shock mounting points? Just the hatches, or were some itr's tearing **** up too?!
I'm gonna run these newer upper mounts just to be safe!
Anyone else with the n1 coilovers care to comment?

Nice, how much were they? I was at the Apexi garage sale but unfortuneately everything was pretty much sold when I got there. Yellow blur was your R the one just parked in the middle of the parking lot with spoon calipers and spoon gauge cluster?
Apexi still has some of the red ones in stock, I have the newer silver ones on my 99 spec N1's but I haven't tried them out just yet.
i have the red older design pillowball mounts on my car for the last three years and have had no problems, we came out with the new ones (silver) to allow more travel and to quite the mounts. either work well, lots of people run the silver ones in front and the red ones in the rear.. you can run all silver all around, all red, or silver and red.. doesnt matter, any of these combos will work well.

.....you work for apex-i usa?
Then maybe you can shed some light on why some people were tearing out the shock mounting points with the 99 spec n1 coilovers? From what we understood, these newer upper pillowball mounts were supposed to cure that problem.
Also, can you guys rebuild the shocks now in the USA?

Apexi holds a meet selling old inventory and products for cheap two days a year. Apexi is located in Orange, CA not too far from Irvine. Look out for it next year and come early, the good stuff gets sold fast.
I put my new moutns on a few days ago, rides great!!!! Then one of the two studs on the mounts that goes through the the chasis and how the coilover stays in place broke less and just started to spin. The nut was already on so I had to take the coilover apart with the mount still on the car.....used vice grips, dremel,etc....now I have the stock rear mounts on and its not as good
in fact it sucks and I have to find some studs or something to fix this crap

They can't do a warranty because I go them used...they can giev them to be at a very low discount price but its still more $$ you know. I'm going to see if I can pickup a stud somewhere around here.
