Car makes a NASTY squeeling sound!!!
There is the weirdiest thing happening with my accord lately. Its a 96 with an h22a. SOMETIMES when im driving, it starts to make a nasty sound like metal on metal rubbing, or like something spinning without being lubricated. But then after a few minutes on the highway it will stops. It always stops making that sound when i stop the car at a light, but will just resume when i start moving again. Some days it happens, others it doesnt. It will start then go away after a few minutes. Is it somethign with the engine? Suspension? It really has me scared. I have had the h22 in there for over a year now with no problems. I dont know what it is.
Thanks
Thanks
definitelty check those brakes does the squeel happen when you turn the wheel. check your brakes it could be a warning that you may have to chancge them?
Do you mean the brake pads? It sounds like just the front left, but it just turns on all of a sudden when im driving. It not like its a sound thats from the pads digging into the rotor and it squeels when I step on the brakes. It just starts to squeel (sounds like a brake would sound) but it just starts whenever it feels like. It turns off whenever it wants to also. Sometimes its short, sometimes long. All I care about is..is it the engine? I cant really tell because it stops when I stop at a light, then resumes again. Maybe breakes I dont know. Thanks guys

Sounds like the brakes, my accord did the same thing about a month ago and it was the brakes I was worried about the engine also but it just turned out to be something pretty simple if its not that maybe it is the belts its better to be safe than sorry so I would get it checked out soon.
I dont know what it would be about the brakes because it doesnt squeel all the time like the pads digging into the rotors. Ill try and check it out soon though because its kinda cold here in colorado.

bringing this thread back from the dead cause i'm having the same problem. it's absolutely, 100% NOT the brakes; hard braking, soft braking, no braking has no effect on the sound whatsoever, it is completely random.
i've been looking through some other threads about this and nobody seems to know what's going on, some possible answers:
-dust shield rubbing on rotor
-wheel bearing
i've checked my dust shield and it does not appear to be rubbing against the rotor so the only thing left is the wheel bearing.
does anyone know any other likely scenarios or know if this squeeling sound is characteristic of a worn wheel bearing?
it's really annoying and i keep half expecting to walk out of my car to see my wheel on fire or some ****.

It's prob the dust shield behind that rotor thats bent and rubbing against one of the rotors, happened to me before and sounds the same as your problem. Take some needle nose pliers and bend it away from the rotor if its pressed against it (probably near the bottom of the rotor assy.)

i just checked it out again and the dust shield clears it all the way around.
also, even with the little slack you have to rotate the wheel while it's jacked up it makes a fairly loud squeal, even taking the lug nuts off while the car was on the ground i could here it squeaking as the car rolled back and forth. so it seems like something's pretty jacked up, i'm still thinking it's the wheel bearing at this point.
is there anyway to find out for sure? and how much would it cost to replace it if that turns out to be the cause?
PS: am i correct in assuming wear indicators on a faded brake pad are only triggered under braking? everyone keeps suggesting brake pads but that doesn't seem plausible if my presumption is true. i've had to replace brake pads several tmes and the wear indicator was never constant, only while braking....i also assume it would **** up the rotor if it actually functions otherwise.

No, they can make noise at any time while driving. Have you removed the pads from the saddles and looked at them?

no, but hearing this i'll be checking them asap.

If its a really bad squeal and you have a manual you might be hearing a throwout bearing, but only when you engage the clutch, at first then it will progressively get worse with time.
