Default Emergency Brake Handle

The black **** that sticks out of the emergency brake handle won't pop back out after i've disengaged the emergency barke. i have to pull it out before i can engage it the next time. what's up? i took the handle apart and the spring is where it's suppose to be. but it won't pop the metal rod back out the way it should. am i missing something? First let me say, that it worked perfectly fine until i pulled off the original handle to replace it with an aftermarket one. i had to do alot of bending, twisting, cutting to get it to work(never again). Anyway, what could the problem be besdies my own stupidity?? Right now, it works by pulling out the **** but i'm afraid that may not last, then i'm screwed (it's a stick shift). Thanks

Dude, you're screwed. I did the exact same thing. Worked okay for about a week then that was it. Finally i had to take the car into the dealer and have them replace the whole emergency hand brake unit. Cost me some bucks too!!

I was in the same boat as you. I cur out some metal to make the new cover fit and the whole emergency brake mechanism fell aprt. There are only 2-3 things in there. I put it all back but for some reason the spring seemed to have lost it's "springyness" or whatever you wanna call it. I lived with it for almost a year then one day, the brake would not engage no matter what, and i had to spend the big bucks just like 4getu to get the crap replaced.
