Default Need cam advice. (I got a PnP head, but what cams?)

Okay. Here's what I got:

I have a port and polish head (B16A2 pr3-2)
Ferrera valves. New guides.
FULL crower valve tain (68185 springs, 87093 retainers)

I'm thinking

Toda Spec B or Cs
Jun Type 2 or 3
Skunk2 Stage 2
Crower cams 63412 or 63413 (or the 63403 older ver)

I'm a noob calculating the lift and coil bind so please help me decide.

My pistons CR is 11.5:1 and my CR is 12:1 (due to thin headgasket and mill
head) so I have the compression to
run big cams, yea?

Please don't tell me to go w/ Crower just because all the parts have to be
the same brand.

Thank you a lot.

y not try crane stage 3.
they are similar to jun3 and way cheaper.
also, that is good compression already.
itr/ctr cams will give you the best hsrpwr for the street if your not reving past 8 or 9.
if u are reving hig. jun3, toda, skunk2 stage, crane stage3 any of thoes will work.

i have a similar set up, my cr is 11.8 i put crane stage 2.
my base dyno was 160 hp and 118 tq.
after the cams, 175 hp and 123 tq. and that is reving to 8k. the graph clearly shows that the horsepwer was still going upwards at 8k. therefore if i were to rev higher i could easily reach 185 hp.

the crane 2 doesnt require cam gears, all i did was merely put them in, and retarded the dist timing alittle. vtec is set at 6k.

i dont prefer crane cams. never heard of them. not dyno/track proven.
i wouldn't want to go cheap on cams and blow my $7000 motor.

any other advice?

I've been on the Crower 63403s for almost 2 years and couldn't be happier. They now recommend the 68188 spring for these cams, which I find somewhat disturbing, but oh well. The new springs are far stiffer.

JUN III with JUN valvetrain... You can use crower but don't be surprised if the cams get killed.

for the money, the skunk stage 2s are freaking great cams. from what I have seen, they are very comparable to jun 3s in power production and run about $750 for the set. As far as valvesprings I am considering these cams and I am tossed up between toda and stock springs with portflow inners.

I did make 198whp w/ 11.36:1 compression stock bore. I've since had the block sleeved and installed JE 12.5:1 85mm pistons. I'm working on installing an ITR LSD and 39# injectors at present. I won't know how much power I can squeeze out of this setup for a few more weeks at this rate, but I'll be hoping for somewhere near 230.

I called Crower about the rather large jump in recommended spring pressure on those cams and was told it was so they could be run past 10k rpm and that I won't have any trouble w/ the 68185 springs I've been using. Given that my redline is 9300 and I stopped making power at 8800ish last time I dyno'd I don't think stiffer springs would be productive and would actually cost power.

So, I should be fine running any Crower cams (since I got full crower valve train)
as long as I dont rev pass 9k? Yea, I was told my springs are good till 10k.
I just hope that they dont bind and break my cams like other people have experienced.

Yeah 10k is what I was told by the man himself Brian Crower for the 68185 springs. I put my Crower schtuff in 2 years ago this month and my cams look like they did the day I got them.

Is there any specific reasons why you think Skunk2 is good? How are they
compared to Crower? I mean, $750 sounds good but JUN 3 are only $880
shipped. As for Crower, you can get them for $570 shipped and its
the Stage 3 all-motor profile (63403)

You know all 3 of these cams are very similar on paper. All 3 have intake lift right around 12mm. 12, 12.3, 12.04 Jun, Skunk2, and Crower respectively. All 3 have intake duration right around 266 degrees. 265.3, 266, 267 Jun, Skunk2, and Crower respectively. The biggest differences are on the exhaust side where Jun seems to favor lower lift and longer duration(11.5mm & 265.3) and on the other extreme Crower seems to favor higher lift and lower duration(11.84mm & 257). Skunk2 stg2 is right in the middle w/ 11.8mm & 262 degrees duration. Of the 3 I think Skunk2 stg2 looks the most aggressive, but there are other considerations that are not as oft discussed. For instance the ABDC spec published by Crower for the 63403 cam is 46 degrees, whilst the only ABDC I've seen listed for the Skunk2 stg2 is 49 degrees. If these numbers are correct this should have the effect of significantly lowering the dynamic compression of the engine utilizing Skunk2 stg2 cams when compared to the same engine using Crower 63403 cams. I've yet to see an ABDC spec listed anywhere for the JunIII cams.

Try Ef-1.com cams go with the JUN Killer

nice cams i'm order my cams springs and retainers right now

EDIT: produces +5 HP and +5 torque on their untuned cams versus tuned Jun 3 cams

very good IMO

Yeah I've heard good things, just haven't seen enough hard data on them yet. Keep us posted on how things go if you wouldn't mind.
