Just changed my oil today, and I noticed that my VTEC engagement is <U>much</U> louder. There was a Carquest oil filter and who knows what kind of oil in there. I put on a Bosch oil filter and some Pennzoil Synthetic Blend 5w-30. Is this normal? The engine is a B16A. I mean its LOUD now, sounds much more agressive when I hit 4800.

and the only way that would happen is if you were very low on oil before you changed it.

 

I wasn't low on oil, it was right in the middle of the dipstick. And unless my tach is 1000 RPM off, my B16A with a PR3 ECU engages VTEC at 4800 RPM.

 

new oil does affect how vtec works...

 

my pr3 engaged VTEC at 4800 also.. sounds so much better when you have CTR pistons and cams.. sounded like my engine wanted to blow up.. but it held up pretty well..

 

How? Oil is oil. Now I could see this if the old oil was 40,000 miles old and was basically sludge but other than that, no way.

 

my vtec kicks in a lot louder and harder, after new oil is put in.... who else feels the same way as i do????

 

 

CRX PAT vtec does not engage at 4800 with that ecu, eithre its not the right ecu or your tach is considerably off.

and for this, please explain to me how this is possible.

 

My B16A with a PR3 ECU engages at 4800. The guy on here Hunter has a hatch with a B16A and a PR3 ECU, which also engages at 4800. By having a B16A with a PR3 as my daily driver, I am 100% convinced that VTEC engages at 4800. This is not the point of my thread. I just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed that changing your oil makes your engine louder, and if someone had a real technical reason that explains it.

 

Well since vtec kicking is directly related to oil pressure, then I can believe that.

Ummm.. no.

First off you don't feel anything when VTEC engauges. You just hear it.

A prolly tuned motor on a dyno graph you'll see a smooth line when vtec engages, not a suddent jump in power.

 

vtec is at 4800 on a 1st gen b16!

Really and how does it do this??? When the VTS opens up it allows oil to flow through the rocker arm assembly... When it reaches each rocker arm oil flows in, hits the piston, which in turn locks all three rockers together... What is new oil going to do there??? The x-over that you are hearing is from the change in valve lift and duration, is this affected by new oil???? NO... I don't see where you are coming from on this but whatever... If you have some really shitty old oil with 20K miles on it, then you do an oil change your car may feel better but this would be because your bottom end rotation assembly doesn't have to cut through all the **** in the oil.... Latez

 

yeah with my gsr crx i didnt change my oil for a good 6k miles and I can hardly spin first gear when i drop the clutch at 5000rpm. the other day i changed my oil with one of those OEM oil filters and WOW!!! I cant grab traction from 1st thru 3rd..... my speedo is pinned at 150km/h or 90mph in a matter of seconds.....


jk guys i have had a first gen b16a and vtec feels like ****..... dont tell me that it kicks harder because first gen b16a vtec you cant even feel the vtec you just hear it. the only place where you feel it is around 5500~5700 when torque actually gets into the TRIPLE digits for the first time....lol.

No. its just not possible.
the way vtec works is oil is pumped into the head through the solenoid and when the solenoid opens it rushes in and pushes little pins through all the rocker arms and locks them onto the vtec rocker's and they run off the hi lobe on the cam(s) (thats the simple explaination)

the ONLY WAY changing oil would have any affect on vtec is if the old oil was crap, sludgy, gunked up, slimy, or low.

Maybe my brain was tripping me up. I also changed my oil pan gasket, which required me to unbolt the bottom part of my header. Maybe I didn't tighten it enough. I removed the coolant reservoir tank that was from the stock engine and no doing anything. This was directly below my homemade short ram, and now you can look down and see the ground. Maybe its that extra cold air coming up thats making the difference. Oh well, thanks for your help guys.

its like this it can sound much louder well any car with its oil changed increases power where it used to be maybe you havent changed your oil ever played granturismo3 remember when you didnt change your oil for a while you begin to feel your cars attitude on how it stands up to oil changes. its all about maintence people maintenance remember performance parts get you there fast maintenance makes sure you get there at all.

 

Wow...that was a long two sentences I'm yet to figure out the answer to the question at hand here; I hear so many conflicting stories. I've never heard a difference in loudness from changin oil. The only thing I can think of was that your oil was low and sludgy from not changing it for 5000 miles(shame on you) and now it's finally running the way it should be running, but because you finally got off your *** and changed your oil, you feel like it's louder.

He did say that he changed the oil filter as well......
I have heard of some people stating that when they used a cheap generic filter (frahm, napa, etc.) and switch to a hamp or JDM honda filter- The audible part of vtec, which is the intake manifold taking a bigger breath, is smoother and a bit louder. Just a thought- I have never noticed a change in sound myself with an oil change though.......

Trying the HAMP this week- I'll see if there is any change, way doubtful though!

 

The old oil in there was only used for 2300 miles, I changed it this time because I was also replacing an oil pan gasket. I'm currently running my exhaust right off of my cat, and the difference in sound I noticed was the exhaust note. When vtec engaged, it almost sounded like I had a more agressive cam note coming from the exhaust. I'm now convinced now that it was all in my head. I also learned that vtec crossover on a PR3 is 5300, because I downloaded a genuine Honda Service Manual on the 1st gen B16a today. Thanks for the help guys.
