Sa-weeet!!! I've been in withdrawal.
And Barichello almost 1 second faster than Shumey???
I likes me some Rubens. Underrated, soft-spoken and a class act.

I was really dissapointed to see Williams/BMW to do poorly though. They seemed to be the only car that locked up their brakes coming into turn one. I guess this brand new chassis, the FW25, still needs some work.
Tonight will be interesting to see which teams will use how much fuel. I predict the smaller teams to use the lightest fuel possible so they can get some exposure ($$$). Don't know what the big three are going to be doing.
We'll see.

btw: I do like the one car qualifying a lot better though. It makes for a better show.
Don't forget that wasn't actually qualifying...it was qualifying for qualifying...today is actual qualifying for the race. Yesterday determined what order they go out on the track today. Who knows what kind of strategies everyone has

Damatta in the Toyota was kicking but and only a hair off Rubens thru the first few sections, but blew it near the end of his lap and ended up well back. He looked like he was going to be top 5-6 before he nearly went off at the last corner.

Man, I'm getting excited anyway. The new qualifying format is awesome. And I can't believe Rubeno was a second quicker than Shuey. More than that, I can't believe BAR did so well. I kinda wish Button was quicker than Villeneuve though - his smack is even pissing me off.

I don't want everybody to get too excited now...tonights qualifying session is what really counts.

Hahah BAR part of the big 3!?! I am going to predict that neither Honda finishes the race on the lead lap. And I am a Honda fan(from Canada so I must love JV, but Jenson is my favorite driver on the whole series). It seems like they have a fast car for about 5-15 laps. Who knows though, this year will not be as predictable as last year for sure. Practice yesterday seemed to be same old - same old with Honda but that could be a fluke. I recall them having problems in Barcelona as well.
I was dissapointed with Renault. They are OK and did fine for having experimentation with the new motor, but I hope they get a little quicker. They are my surprise pick of this year and I think they can win a race later on in the year and probaly take a few poles. Its about time that someone realized the full potential of Alonso as well.
I like the new format of qualifying, it makes it fun to watch compared to last year and allows the smaller teams to get exposure. I would expect Jordan to really fly tonight and be within the top 5 if everyone else takes a larger fuel load. I really want to see Jordan get another sponsor so they can get some more speed.
I expect to see Williams get much better times today if Ferrai plans on a light fuel load. We all know that Williams and McLaren will do what Ferrari does. Someone always knows!!

Keep in mind that some drivers/teams could be working on either race or qualifying setup. It's entirely possible that Ferrari put a qualifying setup on Barrichello's car, and worked on the race setup with MS' car. Either way, I don't expect the margin to be so large between the Ferrari teammates.

What is the new qualifying procedure? I know it's one car at a time, but how many laps? Any other limiting factors that didn't exist last year?

Teams may not add fuel between the start of the race and qualifying. Which could make it a little interesting. The backmarker teams may choose to go with a very light fuel load to qualify near the front, but then be forced to pit early or more than once.

I agree. I think Schumi was driving as fast a set-up as Rubens but did not have the grip. Although there was practice earlier, I think everyone expected the track to be different for the first one out.
Question-can teams change motor characteristics for both the day one qualifying cars and the day two qual/race cars? If they can use a slightly more aggressive set-up that eats fuel, eats tires, etc for day one qualifying, then day two could be a lot slower. I dont know why they would but I guess they could. Another one of the Eddie Jordan media stunts possibly??

No one mentioned that both of the Hondas blew their engines w/ in the 1st 5mins? of practice. Both cars were then thrown together for qualifying last nite, so they both did REALLY well w/ what they had.
