Converting a 4th gen hb into awd/4wd?!
I was reading up on motor/transmision combos the other day when a thought popped into my head.
The 4th gen hbs come with a 4 or 5 speed transmision (d-series)
The 4th gen wagon (4wd version) comes with a 4wd 6 speed tranny (d-series)
My comment gave my buddies a bit more thinking than we'd planned for, lol
We were wondering since both trannies are d-series, couldn't we somehow convert the regular hb into a 4wd/awd?
I figured that if the tranny would work, I should be able to take the rearend out of the wagon and use it's parts to make this happen. The only thing I could think of is shortening the driveshaft to make up for the differance in legnth between the 2 cars.
I'm sure I'm NOT the only one to question this, so . . If anyone can give me some feedback about it . . Please do!
What do you all think?
Thanks,
Sam-

If i can remember the address i'll post it, but i found an AWD CRX the other day surfing. They modified a rear end from a CRV and the hubs. It looked friggin sweet and looked like a TON of work. But if want to put some decent HP to it, i believe the rear end would need to be rebuilt for that application. My .02
it takes some serious modification, but it can be done. check my website for the basic stuff, but you'll have to modify the driveshaft tunnel, and cut and weld the rear floorpan to use the wagon suspension crossmember. it has been done though. do a search for awd and look for hte awd crx.
The AWD CRX using CRV drivetrain (and it's CR-VTEC/Turbo on top of all that) is here:

I too would love to do that to my winter beater HB, too many other projects come first though...
