The Y1 is taller than the LS transmission in all gears, but first.

Y1 S1/YS1 from 90-93 LS
3.166 3.230
2.052 1.900
1.416 1.269
1.103 0.966
0.870 0.742

Seeing as they both have the same final drive, the gearing on the Y1 is taller than an already considered tall transmission (LS).

Its really not that bad. I have a Y1, my friend has a S1 in his hatch. Running right beside eachother, we still shift at about the same places. Either one is fine, its not too tall at all.

Hell no! With a y1 you shift just as quick as an s1. Its really not noticeable at all.

Uhhh...is it me or does it seem that the Y1 has a better gear selection than the LS trans. Do the math. When you multiply the final drive ratio times the selected gear you get a number. That number, the higher it is, means the RPM will be higher in that gear. THere is another formula for that but I have forgot it. It looks like the real lead for the YS1 is first and every gear after that for the Y1 keeps the engine in a higher RPM than the YS1.

the higher the number, the shorter the gearing. The y1 is geared for acceleration better than the LS.

No, the J1 and the S1 are the same transmissions.

Dude....what kinda crack are you on? They are far from the same. So what do you base your argument on saying the transmissions are the same?

uh what crack are you on? He said the J1 and S1 are the same. And they are. The Y1 has way longer gears then the JDM YS1/S1/J1.

EDIT: To go with the original topic at hand, the Y1 is a good tranny for daily use. Has good gears for daily driving and still good gas milage. Would work well with turbo use too.

You, sir, are a dumbass. Go on any website with specs on Honda transmissions and they are exactly the same. The only difference between them was that they came in different cars. One was in a CRX and the other in an Integra I beleive. I actually know what I'm talking about instead of talking straight out of my ***.

Well, the j1 has very short gears and I will tell you this from experience: You do not want the y1 1st gear, that thing is so tall. It's hard to get a good 60 ft. You should be able to mix and match parts though.

My bad, I am the crack smoker. Nothing like "hitting the pipe" before you post. Anyone got a light bulb? I thought the Y1and S1 were being compared.

It depends on what you are using the car for. If it is a highway driven car, but you are also racing it, I would put the y1 5th gear in the j1. The j1 is at really high rpm when on the highway. Otherwise, I believe the j1 is a great trans as far as racing is concerned.

I don't think that 5th gear matters at all. If you are using it for racing you probably won't even use 5th. I have both a Y1 and J1 and the difference in fifth is barely noticable. My gas mileage didn't even change. When you are in 5th trying to make power you have to overcome wind resistance more than gearing.
