Towing.....I KNOW, I KNOW...beat up topic, but I need suggestions
I'm going to be flying out to Oregon to pick up my ITR in a few weeks and I'm having a hard time deciding how to get it back to NY. My initial plan is to fly out there and drive her back. No big deal as far as time is concerned but she only has 18K miles and I don't really want to throw 3000+ miles on it before I even get it registered in my home state. (Driving back on a temp registration) It would be suspicious looking on a Carfax report too.
Now I'd really like to ship it back home in a snazzy closed contained railcar, but I just don't have the funds. All the quotes I've gotten are around $1700-2000. Ouch! It's even more if I factor in the extra cost in changing my airfare to roundtrip.
The latest idea I had was to maybe explore the option of seeing if any rental companies rent out full size pickmeup trucks with towing packages and rent a dolly-type trailer and haul her back to NY that way. Do any of you think any companies do that sort of thing??? Would a fullsize pickmeup truck with just the dolly-type trailers handle a 3000+ mile roadtrip??
ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!
And before anyone says "drive it back you wuss", that is probably what I will do. I'm just looking for new ideas.
Thanks

whatever you do, do not rent a trailer from u-haul! I rented one one-time and anytime the I went over 60 mph it wagged so badly it tried to pull me into the everglades! It was miserable...why not consider an open carrier? If your thinking of driving it anyway you're obviously not worried about it being exposed to the elements, at least this way you'll keep the miles down and avoid the speeding tickets!
I know it's not much, but I've recently purchased a bra and mudguards for it to somewhat brave the elements. My main concern is vandalism or even worse THEFT as far as enclosed in concerned.
