1989 prelude si was over-heating due to head gasket so it was replaced with all the trimmings , machened head- no crack , timing belt and so on . now it is fine most of the time but sometimes it gets to 3/4 temp on the gauge so the heat gets turned on for 2 or 3 mins and it goes down to 1/3 temp normal then it fine for the rest of the trip. anyone no why this is happening.

 

my old 91 si was overheating or at least showing it on the guage and all i had to do was replace the thermostat(i think thats what it is called....WTF i can think for **** right now) yeah anyway it was easy to replace yourself and it isnt too expensive. check into that

 

the thermostat was replaced 3 weeks ago

 

OH.... does it actually go into the red?

 

try the coolant temperature sensor. mine went out on my saturn and did the exact same thing. it costed a whopping $7 to replace.
