Default cam gear question...

my friend has a 96 civic ex, with the d series motor. the mods he has are exhaust and intake, at what position should he adjust the cam gear. he is going to have it dyno tuned but he has to save some money, so this is only a temporary solution.
thanks for your help

I wouldn't do anything until on the dyno. Just me.
He could advance it 1 degree....see how it feels on the butt dyno then make changes from there. Don't go to far in either direction without being on the dyno.

typically on the single cam, advancing the cam moves the powerband higher in the rpm range, and vice versa. But, since mods are little, change is not needed.

For instance, with my ZEX cam, I have it advanced 4 1/2 degrees. Anytime you do this, remember to re adjust the ignition timing, since it's adjusted with the cam.

Remember, all cam gears do is change the range of ponies on the rev graph. Where it gains you power, you will lose elsewhere.

edit- going with what Spade says, I would adjust more than 1 degree. Try adjusting 2 degrees in either direction. This will make it more apparent where you are gaining/losing power. And remember, adjust ignition timing with the new setting when the car is at operating temp with accessories off.

turn the distributor.

There will be 3 12mm bolts which hold the dist. onto the head. Loosen these up, grab your timing light, and adjust till you're on 16 degrees + or - 2 degrees: depending on what gas you're running, etc.

it said:
retard=high end powerband
advance better bottom end.

ignition time only affects low end torque....

advance timing make more low end power but generates more detonation/heat

retarding timing make less low end power but generates a more rich fuel mix and reduces detonation.

timing does not help high end

Advancing the cam = power LOW
Retarding cam = power HIGH

Readjust IGNITION timing always.
