thinking about buying a rpm gauge from a friend for $100 (autometer) and i was wondering would i work for a 96 civic dx hb that has no rpm gauge inside....

how would i install it?

yes it will work you need to tap into the blue DIST wire as i remember and the rest is power ground and light

 

a real good place to hook the tach wire(green wire) is somewhere around the driver side strut mount there should a grey wire harness, around there should be a blue colored wire with a connecter on it. connect your green wire right to that and your done. and thats straight from autometer b/c i had the same question and called them.
