Default How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time.....

I keep thinking about this 91 integra i have sitting outside thats in damn good shape for its age. It will be a race car by this summer. The goal is to have the car in the comp school in august....

So i've formulated a small plan of sorts. Goals? Not really, just guidelines. These will become fuzzier or clearer as each time frame approaches. If the motor blows up or tranny takes a dump, well, i'll deal with that if it happens (knock on w00d).

Have I made any glaring errors? Is 6 months too short a time frame to build a race car?

Appreciate any input on this. I know i've missed things here and there in specifics, but this is not set in stone.

--------------- (two weeks ago)

I bought the car and immediately:

Flush Fluids
Tune-Up/Service Items
Brake Pads
Koni Shocks/GC Sleeves/Eibach Springs (375/450#)/GC Upper Mounts
AEM Intake
Re-Used 225/45/15 Ecsta V700's from last year (nearly new)

---------------

After shaking it down at VIR it ran flawless all weekend. Excellent, less money to spend on busted ****.

--------------- (now)

On order now:

Prothane Motor Mount Inserts (stockers are shot)
Prothane Rear Trailing arm bushings - also shot - these things were like $100, compared to $155 for the rest of the bushing kit for the whole car (which i did not order now because i'm not tearing into that yet)
Short Shifter (i think the stock shifter really stinks)
Shifter Bushings (while i'm in there)
Pedal Covers
Sparco Steering Wheel (big maybe, waiting on a price first)

More Brake Pads as soon as andie gets his compounds in, SS Brake Lines.

Also swapping the 450# springs to the front, buying 600# for the rear. Cant do much more than that without overloading the Koni's. That will stay put for a while. Once i get comfortable with that setup i will be placing a call to Saner (read: at least two events on that setup), and fabbing some helm-jointed end links to replace those aweful looking stock rubber pieces.

While i'm bored, i'm going to rip out the A/C and gut everything behind the front seats. Its gotta come out anyways, and it will make it easier to work underhood and haul **** to the track.

Now that all that is done the car should be pretty solid for a while, provided i dont break anything or hit any tire walls with it.

---------------

I will be doing the school at CMP in April, and possibly the Mazda School at VIR-N the weekend prior.

--------------- (Late April or so)

After CMP, if all is still running good i'm going to start shopping for a welded roll bar (extend that to a full cage later, since i'll still be driving it on the street), seats and belts. I think Sparco Ultras are going to work, i'll pick up some Autopower or Sabelt camlocks. This will probably eat up the budget for a while.

--------------- (May/June)

Throughout the summer i figure i will go through the joints and suspension, replacing bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, hubs, wheel bearings, lug studs and so forth. I'd like to have Dave @ SMSP build me a header and exhaust but i'm not sure if it will be in the budget. If its not, i'll skip it till later, and continue working on small engine/suspension/alignment tweaks as i do schools this summer.

--------------- (July/August)

If we're still on track here i figure i'll have the cage finished, the saftey items installed (net, fire system, kill switch, etc), pull the transmission and replace clutch/flywheel/diff and get the thing in the comp school and see how we do.

I can accept building it yourself but, if you are going to go to the trouble, don't spend any dough on anything that isn't SCCA IT legal. Accept your fate and go to it gracefully, without denial...

well Ryan, you and I are in the same boat.

this is actually a conversation I had with Corey today. We are shooting for the august comp school for the Accord also. Looks like I will have a pretty good partner.

My philosophy is: How are you gonna find a pre-built racekaa unless somebody builds one first? I plan on doing this for the rest of my life and have my kids doing it along with me, what better way to start than in a 4 door accord?

After you rip out the A/C you will need part number 9 in this picture.

You can find it here http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.net/...=HEATER+BLOWER

Short Shifter (i think the stock shifter really stinks)

The above are not ITA legal.

Other than that, sounds good. Ot I'll sell you one of my RX-7s for a fraction of what you will end up spending on an Integra.

hmmm... well i'll get these in for now and hold on to the stock pieces, and source some junkyard motor mounts if i decide to run an SCCA school (i probably will).

The good news is the car will work well in ITA too, if i ever wanted to do that.

Remember, I had an rx7. It was stinky My dad said "goddamn, turn that thing off or get it outta my shop"

School at CMP, in a honda/acura? Save yourself a PITA weekend and have good brake ducting on that sucka before you get there!

As for roll bars/cages....I highly recommend you go custom. Find a cage builder you trust and build your bar specifically to become a cage later.... Someone like Chris Schimmel in NC or Walt Puckett (metalworker on here) down near SC.

Get rid of the lunchbox!!! (sorrry, I had to!)

While everyone has their opinions, my experience with Koni is that they don't hold up well with anything over 400#. I highly recommend a TrueChoice revalve if you can afford the downtime.

Side Note: I found a complete 93 Head/Manifold/TB for sale on the right coast (found a few on the left coast but shipping would kill me) for $200. Worth 10hp over the 90-91 stuff.
