After a very large snow I heard a very loud metalic ticking from under my hood. I had a mustang style hood with a large opening, so snow and water is accessable to my motor. I checked it out and it seems to be coming from the alternator (just put a new one in 3 months ago)
The first day it made the metalic ticking and screeching sound the entire time, now it only makes it when I: turn on my lights (only for a sec or two) when I turn on my heat, or as soon as i rev it high and push in the clutch
This seems to be the alternator, but I never heard of one making this noise and it is also new!?

any suggestions

sometimes the loud ticking is actually a blown head gasket..does it over heat? or u get alot of white smoke coming out of the exhaust?

 

no smoke, and no overheating.
It seems to be electrical because the lights and heater instigate the noise.
Also why would heavy acceleration cause the alternator to act up.
and would dirt and rocks possibly be the problem??

 

id have that alternator checked. the bearings might have gone on it already, it sometimes happens. was the alternator new when u bought it or used?

 

Sounds like your alternator bearings may be rusty. Spray some WD-40 or silicone lubricant into the it and see if it helps.

 

Let's get to the root of the problem....

4 cylinders really suck alotta air.

 

well the 16 psi 4 cylinder does require a little more cooling. I bought the hood for looks, and the potential of an additional IC like the WRX, but piping was a bit cramped for that idea
