Default emissions RAPED me

91 accord ex 140,000miles
Okay, i failed an emissions test today...miserably. I just want to get some opinions on possible fixes here are the results:
____________High speed__________________LOW speed
___________MAX____MINE________________MAX____MINE
HC(PPM)____132____314__________________136____255
CO(%)______0.73____7.51________________0.76____0.7 5
NOx(ppm)___945_____270________________1045____2130
O2%_______________0.2_________________________0.9
Dillution%___________17.6________________________1 4.8
CO2%______________10.1________________________14.0

these are the only places that i struggled, if it will help I can post the CO2%, O2%, and dillution. The car throws no CELs. the guy said to buy a new cat and egr valve and hope like hell it works, but he is just a quick-lube dumbass I think

Damn! I don't envy you guys. Here we don't have emissions testing. Not yet.
It makes me shiver just to think what kind of results i'd get with 375K and original cat still on + CEL on faulty EGR.

I'll ask the easy questions first:

What are your Mods? Was the oil changed right before? Are your plugs old? Is your airfilter dirty?

Oh yah...pls post all the numbers...especially the O2%

You got real shitty numbers!

When I removed my intake manifold I cleaned out my egr chamber. Its not so much the valve as the chamber,,,,,,, it gets clogged up with soot and carbon and basically stops working.

Try cleaning it out. The problem is to clean it and get all the crap out you may have to remove the intake manifold.

i hate to say it but that is not a bad reading you can change it easily change the cat your oil and plugs and you will pass.... everyone needs to remember to warm your car up REALLY good before going in for a test if you have to wait for the test let it idle and always use the LOWEST octane gas when testing it will give you lower #'s we deal with this all the time in so cal because we have to put our cars on a dyno to check the smog and i get alot of cars in the shop because they didnt pass smog so just do the simple things and you will be fine

Get it up to temp and keep it there. Drive at least 10 miles to the test station and keep the RPMs up while in line.

We should set up some kind of way to register your cars here in Ohio. We don't have any emissions and I'm sure insurance is a lot cheaper here too. (Lower theft rates) This emissions testing is getting out of hand IMO.

that looks like more than a cat, but you do need one of those too from the looks of those readings.

the egr prob. needs to be checked... from the looks of that nox readings.

you are passing alot of unburned fuel (hc= hydrocarbons) through too... o2 sensors sould be shitting the bed... they do not always throw a code.

also just my opinion but the lowest octane gas is not always best for testing... premium can work better in some cases.

Maybe not in your county, but some of us in Ohio have to get an e-check once every two years.

No mods except a muffler...and the snorkel goes in past the muffler to take its reading. the cars here are put onto a dyno as well and I had let the car run for at least an hour before I brought it in...and the O2 sensor was replaced last year at emissions test time...nothing will be happening too soon b/c we just got over an inch of sleet!!! everything is shut down, even the courts ( I had a ticket today that I was supposed to have a hearing about ) I have just updated the chart at the top with all of the numbers that I got

Aare you burning alot of oil? Do you run low on oil every thousand miles or so? Do you have a blackend bumper?

If your car has been maintained (i.e. oil changed thru its life), you shouldn't be burning too much oil. 140k is still kinda low for an OEM Honda convertor to go bad unless someone threw leaded gas in at some point (or never-NEVER changed the oil....causing a less-efficient burn & HC over-saturation over time which would eventually kill the convertor). Were your smog check numbers similar or very dis-similar to this round of testing?

smog test???( I dont know what that is...its not on here) I have only had the car for 10k miles...but have been on the oil-change like a madman...probably at least 5 changes...I know it was mis-treated before I got it, but it passed last year after about $1500 of work...I dont want to go through that again.

sorry...smog check is californian for 'emmisions testing'

it probably IS a dead convertor + blocked EGR ports (not necesarily the egr valve). However, you could probably pull a used OEM convertor from a smashed up 90-93 and have it fit no problem for pretty cheap. I would just make sure to pick a car in the junkyard that looked like it had been taken care of... (the thought of which will lead me to my next junkyard topic)...cause that would hint at the (working) condition of the cat-covertor. Also check to make sure it fits in general ... I'm sure a 90 would fit your 91. I'm also sure a 92 would fit a 93 and vice versa.

Edit: Ooo...with Carbon Monoxide reading like that at High-RPM, don't dare let that thing rev-up in a close garage for too long.

Thanks for the help, but its too cold to be working on my POS right now, and dont worry, it doesnt live in a garage, we have some serious ice out, so i will not be doing anything for a while. I think i am going to sell it though

That's definitely the cat. Don't sell the car to someone if it doesn't pass inspection. If it's like NC, they won't be able to register their car....

Really? I've never heard of this in Ohio. I guess maybe near bigger cities like Columbus or Cinci.

I use to work at an emissions station and the fine if you get caught makes it very not worth accepting money to try and change results.

Fyi the inspector can not make sure you pass no matter what... they do not have that much control over the testing.

you'd have to find the cat for free... i.e. steal it from a junkyard, because it's "illegal" for them to sell used cats. although you may find a junkyard that wont care, but i think they can get in a lot of trouble for selling used cats. find a pull-it-yourself yard, you should be able to sneak one out (bring your biggest toolbox...)
