speed freaks membership changes
I got word from one of the local autocross officials that the SCCA is planning big changes for the speed freaks members. None of these changes are likely to be good for the organization. First they want to change the age limit for SF members to 21, second they want to increase the annual dues to $50. While nothing is final at this point, a letter/email to the a few of the people on this page expressing you concern, c would definatly help keep these changes from happening, http://www.scca.org/interactive/natstaff.html
Actually, Speed Freakz is already cancelled. They are planning to replace it with a program called First Gear with the 21 age limit
So if you're <25 and >21 like me, renew now while you still can under the old rate!

Thanks for the post. This sucks... I'm 22, I was hoping for another couple of years of cheap dues... i am still in college.

I sent my el cheapo SPEED FREAKZZZZ registration form today, wonder if they'll still accept me, I couple of my auto-xing buddies sent theirs in at the beginning of Feb and they got a membership.

or not join at all.
**** SCCA. They have nothing to offer me, certainly not enough for me to send them $75. and if I want to autoX this year I will pay the $5-or-whatever non-member premium.

That attitude will change if and when you ever start racing.
Have you done any racing with SCCA? I thought you only did NASA.

**** SCCA.
and i just squeeked in as one of the last speedfreakz, which is good for me 'cause i'm a broke-*** college student
but i have no problem paying full price
Who ******* cares? Nut up and pay like THE REAL MEMBERS have been doing for what? 50 years? It won't hurt the SCCA to get rid of these programs! They are designed to PROMOTE, not SUSTAIN the organization. It is a "Trial User" type of deal. Do I have a problem with these programs? Not at all. Will I lose sleep and sign a petition if they disappear? Nope.

I am just as real a member, (ie, %100 real) of the SCCA as you are, even though my membership cost half of what yours did. I did not post this to try and change your sleeping habits, I did post this so those that do enjoy saving a little money on membership costs would know that there will be some changes soon.
I do believe that programs like this have done very well in helping recruit new members. These people may or may not have joined otherwise.

My feeling is that if there is no limit to what you can do in the SCCA with that membership then EVERYONE should get a "trial membership" discount for their FIRST year and then after that they pay full price just like everyone else.
I dont really think its that everyone is just bickering and whining, but if anyone could save money before and look forward to it in the future then I dont see what's wrong about wanting to know why the changes have been made, or therefore discussing it. I went from paying 35 bucks an event (before i joined) to skipping straight to 10 bucks, so being a broke *** young college student, this really made me happy.i realize being an "older member" paying 20 bucks isnt that far from this so its not that big of a deal. maybe for the older members they think "well i shoveled snow for 5 hours extra just to save up an extra 10 bucks or i sacrificed this and that, its not hard, get some *****", ok, great.
it cut help me cut down on the total cost of gas/food at the event/fees, etc etc as a whole. of course next year the extra 10 bucks isnt so bad each event at 20 dollars but hey, 10 bucks here and there is ok with me if it IS possible to save. 10 x 12 = 120. plus the extra 20 to make the 50 dollar membership due. makes about 140 bucks per year to save. not bad to me. if i can save it why the hell not, if i cant save it, and this is for the betterment and longevity of the SCCA then ok i understand

Keep in mind that I was a poor college student as well. I managed to pay $20 an event PLUS the $45 a year membership dues (that is what it cost back in 1993-1997 when I was in college).
No sympathy from me . . . and to be honest, it sorta bugs me that people are "concerned" by this.

I just sent in my speed freakz application the other day, but would have paid the full due if that was the only option...honestly, I almost paid the extra $$ just to NOT get a gay *** sticker that reads "speed freakz". it's just crappy marketing to pander to the stunna rice that sometimes makes me embarassed to say I own a honda, haha.
SCCA offers a 5 dollar discount if you are a scca member at my local auto-x's. They only have 5 or 6 I can attend but that is enough that it pays for itself. So i do not mind paying that much. I do find the magazine not that great. I do like looking at all the rule changes anf trying to figuer out what they are changing

I guess petersburg just depends on how much autoX seattime I will be able to get, and if I even have a car to drive.
