Default Check your skills, ---- A Flashing Check Engine Light on a Type R

Well, in the 30k plus miles on my Type R this is my first *flashing* check engine light.

To clarify this light flashes while I am driving. If you reset the car it'll drive for a little distance and then it starts running rough and then..... flashing MIL light and NO POWER, well compared to normal

Here's my symptoms, runs rough, black smoke, and idles on only three (which is fine if its an insight) cylinders.

My first guess is a bad injector. Although it seems a little early for that. Then again, I did have a fuel pressure riser on the car with supercharger a little while back. Now that it is Naturally Aspirated, with SKunk 2 cams, I think the slightly larger fuel pump is exagerating the problem.

I disconnected the injector clips, one at a time. Guess what ? One of them made no difference; plugged in or not.

Also there is this nice smell of raw fuel......

I installed new spark plugs about a week ago. They were NGK R's

But here is where it gets interesting. Today, I changed my oil. Not just a normal change, but a swith from Castrol 10w-30 to Castrol Syntec 10w-30.

A little more about the motor, it has approx 6-7k miles on the rebuild. I had a brand new Type R head put on a brand new oversized piston set. I did all the work in the ProMotion Shop. And while I am not perfect, I'd say she was put together correctly.

So tomorrow, we're going to figure out what's wrong with her. But for tonight, I'll let you tell me what you think it is then, tomorrow I'll figure it out and let you all know.

I am going to check that in the morning. At first I was a little irritated by it. Now I see it as an opportunity to learn something new. Still, take a guess....

If you just check the code then we wouldn't have to guess so then you know what's really wrong with your car.

Maybe this post is less about fixing his car and more about a guessing game for the rest of us. My guess is he already knows what's wrong with his car and he want to see who can guess right. If he really wanted help, he'd pull the code instead of insisting that we guess. I'll play...I guess it's a bad MAP sensor.

My crystal ball says the code will be a misfire code.

Blake, check the ignition system, firing on three and blowing out fuel from the exhaust doesn't sound like a bad injector to me.

This same thing happened to me, but it was something as dumb as a loose plug wire on the distributor. on me.

I'll say bad plug.

Sorry to leave you guys hanging on this one......
So here's how it went down. I checked the code which came up 71. New to me too. But either wayt that is what it was.
I removed the spark plud wires from the spark plugs and guess what? There was a nice little pond of water down in there! After removing the water I thought I'd be done. NOPE. The vehicle still ran poorly. Now I looked at the spark plugs again. The number 2 cylinder was a bit on the new looking side. In other words, I think she has been cleaned bu fuel for a while. Well to make a long story short.
I pulled a new set of wires down off the shelf installed them and WHAM-O that cured the problem.
So for those of you who might have a similar thing happen, check you wires. Althoug mine are factory and had only 35k miles on them, they went bad. Well at least one of them was very weak..

Till next time!!
Oh and maybe I should re-dyno my 4 cylinder type r. The 3.5 cylinder made 175 at the wheels!

71 is a misfire code because of that water. good to hear that you got it fixed though.
