Clutch replacement
Hi- how hard is it to replace clutch/pressure plate on a 1988 Accord LXi? How long would it take for an ameatur? (I have done some mech. work - like replacing water pump/brake parts/transaxles, etc.)
Should I buy genine Honda clutch/plate/assembly or would aftermarket clutch parts do fine? The price for genine Honda clutch assembly from Hparts.com is about 196 dollars vs 110 dollars for the aftermarket one from Advanced Parts store? A pretty signficant price difference.
Any advices or suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.
Jim

if you can take your tranny off you'll be fine. its just unbolting the tranny. pulling it off far enough to be able to work in there. removed the pressure plate. remove the disc. re-install making sure you have the alignment tool. you need 12pt sockets. not sure which size it was. its not an easy job. it took about 4 hours to do it the first time and i had some help from my girls dad which has been a mechanic for 20years
If you are pretty mechanically inclined then it is not very hard. My friend and I did one on his CRX in a few hours. we removed the whole tranny because it made it a lot easier. you need a 12 point socket for the bolts on the clutch and you need to make sure that you put them on hand tight first and then tighten them like you would do with a wheel, and make sure to torque them all to spec. If you need any help just ask.
Hello,
I work at a transmission shop, and from past experiences the best advice I can give you, is NOT to buy a autozone or advanced auto clutch. Stick with OEM, or aftermarket racing. Buying the cheapest clutch on the market does make a differance. Note: A lot of aftermarket racing clutches are made by the same company, the only major difference is the clutch pressure plate. The fingers are more stiff, for stronger application.
I recieved the above information from a manufacturer, for what its worth.

i forgot to add. its recommended to re-surface the flywheel when you change your clutch. its an easy job to take the flywheel off once the clutch is already off. just a couple more bolts. i think 6 were on mine. i got a whole new flywheel so i dont know how much places charge to re-surface them
I would strongly recommend a Honda clutch for a non-performance car...I have 140,000 miles on mine (91 accord), and it still works really well...I would stick with it unless you plan on racing your car...which it doesn't sound like you do

Might want to check them out for a clutch, but like stated before i wouldn't buy an autozone clutch

Agreed
. I would highly recommend a stock Honda clutch if you're not racing or anything, cuz driven right they do last a VERY long time. Mine is still on the original factory clutch with 311.6k miles believe it or not (most people don't, lol), but really it is....never been changed. I just keep the cable adjusted properly with about 1 inch of freeplay, and it still grabs tight and holds strong every shift, and engauges about half way up (pedal travel). So yea...very good quality clutches.
I too have heard some pretty bad stories about autozone clutches (mostly) and a few other aftermarket ones too. Just stick with Honda...you know their stuff is good and don't have to worry about it.

Hi - Thanks for the suggestion of Cityclutch link - I got this reply from Cityclutch after I asked if the parts are Honda parts - what do you think of the reply below? It offers a very good price, although, but I do not know about OEM Exedy.
""Thanks for your inquiry. 08-008 comes with pressure plate, disc, throwout
bearing, and alignment tool. Also, this is made by OEM Exedy who is the
largest clutch manufacturer in Japan supply most Japanese automakers. ""

Exedy makes very good oem replacement clutches and performance clutches. I have an Exedy organic street disc with a clutchmasters stage1 pressure plate and it'sstill holding strong after 25K+ miles of hard driving/racing.Original Honda clutches are made from Daikin. Just be sure to PROPERLY break-in the new clutch and after that, you'll be set. and also be sure to take off your flywheel and get it resurfaced. any machine shop will charge you around 30-50 bucks.
