Cheapest POS Auto-x car
Sorry to post here, but its impossible to sort through all the vehicles for sale forum. So after posting here for about 6 months, I decided I should stop asking questions and start racing.
So I'm an auto-x n00b, and I'm lookin' to get my toes into G stock or H stock... So checking prices at Edmunds, a stock CRX HF is $1500!!!!!!!
Good Lord. I sold my '89 Camry V6 with 150k miles for $800, and it was running great! So, does anyone want to give up their Civic for cheap?
Stock would be great, since I'm gonna get totally 0wned anyways, I figured I'd get less of an ownage on GS or HS. Or any ideas of other cars that I can get for sub-$1.5k that wouldn't cost me my left nut to maintain? Thanks.
Oh, and if you have any cars up for sale, streetable would be good since I have no car capable of towing...

Old school 4AG toyota celica gts! They're sweet cheap racers. They have a dohc 4 banger AND rear wheel drive. An old hatch would be my second choice. You can run the hatch in STS if do some suspension mods.

How about a 91-94 Nissan Sentra SE-R? I picked up a nice one-owner, all stock, 1992 SE-R with 75,000mi for $2000 last November. I intended to use it as a winter beater. I've run it in G Stock twice so far (on snow tires both times). I finished 6th in overall PAX last weekend at an event. (I'm not much of a driver, so I credit the car for making me look good.
) Hell of a fun little car, awesome in winter weather, cheap parts, cheap insurance, easy to maintain and work on, relatively easy to find...
You can find them for sub-$1500, but they may be ratty and need some work. $2500-$3000 should buy you a near perfect one.

Yeah, the Passat in your sig will do just fine in GS. No need to shell out another $1500-2000 for a beater that will probably need another $1500-2000 in repairs in the next year. Save the cash for a set of r-tires for next season...
Yup - the cheapest POS autocross car is NO POS autocross car. If nothing else, street cars that get solo'd are generally better cared for than those that don't.

lo-buck found his 91 for around 700 dollars and it needed a left front knuckle, tie rod ends and a clutch. i have been hearing about people picking up first gen integras for a song and a dance. like 700-800 bucks.

Heh. Well, the Passat is the would throw me in STS...and I'd be wearing stock touring tires....
Plus, that's mommy and daddy's car, and I sure they won't like it if I come to them telling them I broke all the control arms (yeah, VW engineering at its best!).
I'll probably auto-x it once or twice, just to get a feel for it. Or should I be using the slushbox CR-V in SM instead?

buy a used kart. many auto-x groups now have classes for karts. You'll get the most bang for the buck. They are fast, fun, and parts and tires are cheap (it's all relative though). Then buy a reliable daily driver w/ room to haul a kart. Good luck, have fun.

Assuming the car is kept in proper order and you do a tech inspection of the car the day before the event you will never suffer a breakage while autocrossing. At least I never have.
How exactly will you break control arms at autox???
Those karts are pretty cool. Looks like fun to zip around the track in one of those. As for breaking something during autox, most drivers tend to be car lovers = they take care of their babies before and after the session. I wouldn't worry about something breaking, but watch out for those cones! They might leave a mark on the paint.
I know a handful of people who had their control arms fail before 30k with all street driving
And autocrossing wouldn't exactly help that situation...

i got my 85 crx dx for $120. ran too, just that it smoked on startup until warm(piston rings) and it had 4 brand new tires and a new clutch. just keep looking, i think these crx's are pretty competitive.
relatively easy to find...
They are??
I second that... good luck finding one in any condition, much less good/cheap condition

The ball joints on the control arms are absolute junk, and crap out, eventually leading to the whole control arm loosening itself. And there's no other choice but to replace the whole arm...
On a brighter note, I found a 1994 Protege with 141k miles for $1200...and claims to have all the records, plus has recently done brakes, tires, battery, and muffler...
