I know I need to have every single emissions sensor in tact to pass the test, I guess there are 24 the computer test checks for. Well I have a 1996 RS, with a 98 udsm type r motor and when I run the type r ecu I get codes because I'm missing a sensor or two (type r's have a sensor that my car doesn't). I have a jdm ecu in my car right now, but that doesn't communicate with the computer they use for smog. I have to go to a test only place and I'm trying to figure out which ecu I can use to make sure everything goes smoothly. Anyone have and advice or experience with the situation? Thanks

you get codes with the usdm ecu or jdm ecu??

 

He gets codes with them USDM ITR ecu so he's runningt the JDM ecu.

 

i get codes from the usdm ecu, code 91 (i was told itr's have a sensor in the gas tank that my car doesn't have), the jdm ecu is code free but can't be used with CA's smog computers.

 

I've heard that 97 obd II ecus don't look for that sensor in the gas tank. I'd look into that...try and find someone local that will hook it up.

yeah, u better find a usdm ecu, jun ecu definitely won't work.

 

so they're going to check my ecu too? if they don't, how do they know i have a jdm ecu?

 

JDM ecu has an OBD1 program. That won't jive well with their equiptment.

 

i never seen them check the computer.

 

they hook up their computer with yours. They won't know you have a jdm ecu. When I tried they thought they had a problem with their equipment so they called Sacramento. I knew what was the problem and just got out of there.

 

They don't check the actual ecu, they plug in their junk to this thing right by your coin holder.

a 97 itr ecu is the way to go. im using a 98 itr ecu in my 97 gsr and im getting a 91 also.

could u use a 96-97 gsr or b16 ecu for the test??

I forgot what it is called too but it basically controls everything in your car and can check for codes.

 

so my jun ecu won't comply with their machine? i dont throw any codes either.

 

The last time I got my car smogged, I watched as he plugged his thing into my car. I'm not sure how they do it where you go, or if they do it at all, I'm only speaking from experience.

From what I understand, because it's OBD 1, that won't work with their equptment..even if you aren't getting any codes. You can try it, but I'll bet a few bucks you'll fail based on your ECU.. after all, it's part of the emissions junk..
