Default Opinions on overheating problem

Ok crx with zc runs fine and all then out of the blue it will start getting real hot, replaced thermostat a few times, radiator cap, fan comes on, hoses, bled the system, checked timing, it's not leaking coolant that i can tell my thought was the heater core, but i was trying to flush the system and after driving it around for like 20 minutes with no problem out of the blue the needle started to fly up to hot. so when i went to drain the coolant a few minutes later i opened the drain plug and the **** was cold. NOT WARM I'M TALKING FREEZING COLD, so could it be my radiator, i really don't want to start taking things apart until i'm pretty sure i know what i need to be taking apart, thanks in advance

I dont have experience with honda thermostats, but it isnt on backwards is it? Have you tried running the motor with the heater on? How is the water pump - any coolant coming out of the weep hole? If you want to see if there is coolant flowing just squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine has warmed up. You should be able to feel/hear it flowing when you clamp down on it.

Did you replace the Water Pump during the swap? Sounds like no coolant circulation to me.

is the motor actually getting hot or does the gauge just indicate hot?

alright sorry i wasn't specific enough, I don't think you can put the thermostat in backwards, yes there is pressure on the upper hose it gets warm as do all the others except lower, the water pump was replaced during swap it was done not too long ago, but theres no leaks around it. it motor itself is getting hot not just a gauge, and i ran it with the heat on
