Damn Snow!
So my 5.5 hour drive from Atlanta to Hillsborough last night takes more like 9 hours, due to morons.....but you know what was worse? Do ya????
Running over some random snow-hidden debris less than 5 miles from home and having to change a tire in the snow with the factory crap jack and crap lug wrench using my crap $2 flashlight (that I dropped 4 times and it somehow didn't die!!!!!) to put on the space saver spare (that is 13 years old and somehow still has air in it!...I must be living right.)
All in all, I must say, I would have rather been drinking heavily yesterday.
As a side note, AWD rocks.

Bowie, stopped by the shack on Saturday and was surprised you weren't there. Weren't you on the hook to instruct at VIR?? You must have more of a life than the rest of us since you found something to do that quickly.
The drive back from Raleigh sucked. I had likely the worst tool for the job. Stiff and lowered $E-R with AVS intermediates. Oddly, I had no problem, and I lost count of the 4wd vehicles that had found the ditch.
I'm am absolutely convinced that driving 40mph in those conditions is just as mentally taxing as driving 120+mph on a race track. MUST look far ahead, MUST watch the mirrors, MUST be smooth with ALL inputs. Watching a 4wd truck spin while changing lanes in traffic in the middle of I-85 was sure proof of that (idiot!)
It was actually good practice....

Yeah, the original plan for the weekend was to go to Atlanta Thursday after work, spend Friday with the girlfriend as a surprise (not only valentine's day but her birthday...I know, I am screwed) and then come back up friday night for VIR.
Got the call on the way down that the event was cancelled so I stayed down there for the weekend.
Snow driving is wonderful practice...people at work think I am quite mad to go out and drive as much as possible every time it comes down....heck, I got to work at 7am this morning...no one else has shown up yet.

I went to Apex yesterday (out by whitney's house) to go to the only Home Depot that had the shop lights I was looking for. On the way home on Hwy. 55 I counted no less than ten cars off the road, some with substantial damage.
In the GS-R snow made for fun practice. In the Suburban it's a nightmare. 2WD, short axle ratio, 454 torque, and brakes that suck when its *bone dry* mean snow sucks. I hopped on I-40 as soon as I could, knowing that while it would be slow due to morons, it would be fairly safe as a result.

I love the Expedition (4wd) in the *snow* but I prefer the 944 in the ice - the dagoned truck just doesn't want to stop anytime this year - the p-car is light enough that its noticably less drama to woe down.

I learned to drive in the snow. The best vehicle for slippery conditions is a small, light FWD car. I remember MANY a time just motoring past people in SUV's and big, heavy RWD cars that were just spinning tires and stuck in ditches. We used to call my parent's BMW the "ultimate traction machine" for how many times they got stuck at work or whatever and I had to go pick them up in my POS Chevy Citation.
Of couse, at Christmas this past year, I got to drive my brother's WRX in 6 inches of snow. The beauty of all wheel drive is truly an understatement in that kind of weather. Simply incredible...
