Is this normal when you disassemble an engine? Or is something wrong? LMK. Thanks.

looks like a POS headgasket is all I see. Other than that, the motor and sleeves look good, just probably might need a rebuild.

We are rebuilding it completely. I was just wondering if I was sold a bunk engine. Thanks.

well, if you are rebilding it completely, unless it has a cracked block or cracked head, then it doesn't really matter anyway.

once you take apart the short block, I would rehone the block/cylinders just to make sure it's perfectly round.

Looks like it was running pretty rich. If you think about it, its not that bad. Think about how many explosions occur inside your combustion chamber.

Do you think I should leave the head pretty stock? And where can I pick up a Helms manual?

That's why we have Honda Tech, for people like him to get on and ask these questions.

I was just asking because when we pulled the heads on my friends 350 it looked a lot different. Excuse me for asking a question. and it is a B18a1, for the person saying it looked like a SOHC.

it does look like an sohc lol...

I understand he's askin, just wanted input from other engine builders with more experience probably to make sure nothing appears different than the norm on the block.

it was a legit question.

I built my first engine when I was 17. Didn't know ANYTHING about internals, just asked a local old guy all the time. Engine came out mint and still running to this day.

The engine was a mildly built 350 for my 70 Chevy truck. Performance cam, Edlelbrock crap, etc. I assembled EVERYTHING except cam bearings and piston pins and machine work. Puppy is still purring.

True, it is good to read up first, but learn as you go. Nothing is worth more than hands on experience.

Explosions??!?!?? You should only get explosions when there is detonation. Otherwise, the fuel/air mix is burning at a certain rate.

Tell it brotha!

Appreciative knucklehead who plans to dive headfirst into engine building, with nothing more than a Helm's and a prayer.

that's normal...like the other people mentioned, i'd have that thing honed out. also, looks like the motor was running a little too rich. you gonna be using the same pistons and stff for it?

Pretty much. If you make sure all the clearances are good, assemble the parts where they need to be , and torque down to spec you should be good
