oil filter
anyone know what size is the filter on the B18b?... i looked it up in the FRAM book at the autoparts store and came up with PH3593A... now when i bought it and came home my dad tried taking off the OEM filter and hmm seems like it's bigger than the FRAM... also my dad and i have been struggling trying to get it out for an hour or so... since we had no jack laying around we went from top and reached under the intake manifold but no luck... went underneath but it's hard to move around... so now my car is sitting on the driveway with no oil in it so that means no driving for me tonight

If I were you when it comes to oil filter I would stick with OEM Honda. If you try to go thru the top by the IM you better have a real skinny arm. It's best to go thru the bottom. If yer having problems turning try gripping it with sand paper and it should twist off. Make sure the old o-ring is on the old filter if you can get it off. As far as the Fram looking like a different size, sometimes aftermarket oil filter might vary in size. Although I have never used Fram.

most auto parts store will have a book with all the part #'s in it. just look up your make and model and it will show the part #'s for the oil filter. As for taking it off, they make these plates(kinda look like little shallow cups/bowls) that fit onto the back face of the oil filter and you can connect a 3/8" drive wrench to that and turn it right off. They also have this tool with a rubber strap, its hard to explain but if you see it you'll understand how it works.

how much is the OEM filters?... thought it might be expensive so i went to the local autoparts store and got the FRAM filters cause there cheap and i'm still running on parents $$$

... just that the cap i got for the FRAM filter won't fit on the OEM filter so it's a bitch trying to take off

i actually about this same thing last week i think... so instead of wasting my time typing... i found it for you here's a copy ...
just for future reference... this is the BEST tool i think for filter removal.. makes it a hundred times easier.. thanks to the guys here at ht i picked one up at sears and ask my roomate.. it made it 100 times easier... oh and for the drain bolt, i actually replaced mine with one of those fram sure drain things.. so all i have to do is screw on a hose to the new replacement drain bolt and put the other end of the hose in my drain pan and i get zero mess.
here's a pic of the craftsmen oil filter removal tool i was talkin bout...

here's the sure drain thing...

OEM is about $5-6 normal price (w/o the dealer coupons) you can get a Purolator Pure 1 from pep Boys for around $6 and you can get a Bosch Premium for around $5... or an STP for around $3 at autozone...

OEM filters to not filter as well as other filters out there. There was a oil filter comparison test i was reading on a few months back. The test was for filter element only and USDM honda oem ranked one of the worst. It was ranked down there with fram. What got good ratings was bocsh, STP, mobil 1, HAMP, and OEM canada. Personally i use the STP which is unbeatable for its 2.99 price and i notice that the oil isnt as dark anymore when its being drained. Thats enough proof for me that it works better than USDM oem honda.

I also use stp since reading that test.

okay guys... well today my dad bang the **** out of the oil filter that was on... he took a hammer and a metal rod and made a dent in it so it'll twist off... slowly it did and loosen... problem was there's a bracket holind the intake manifold up so thats in the way and my dad says there's a sensor on the other side so it's hard to fit in a oil filter wrench
Seriously, you should invest in some jacks and jackstands.. go check out sears.. they had a crazy sale on a nice suv jack at my local store.. i wanted it soooo bad. haha.. but i already have a jack. But like they said.. the mroe into ur car u get.. the more you're gonna wanna work on it urself and ur gonna end up gettin these things.
where do u find STP filters? I cant find them Kragen!!

if you are tight on $$$ id go with the stp oil filter.
us oem honda filters are fram...

umm the difference is in lifting height... the 2 tons only do like 15" or so... whereas the 3 ton or 3.5ton SUV jacks raise about 20"... 5" might not seem like a lot but when you want the car on all 4's like when your doing an exhaust system install or something the extra lift is nice.. I also like the higher margin of safety w/ the 3 ton jack stands because it has a wider base which makes it more stable/wider stance.. and w/ a 2.5K lbs car on top of you... I wouldn't mind paying the extra $100 to go to w/ the 3 ton SUV jack vs the 2 tons...
also I would like to add that I did first go w/ the cheapie 2 ton because I was still in college and we all know how that is (funds are tight)... the 3 ton is so much better and worth it... oddly enough my 3 ton jack has a lower clearance than the 2 ton.. my cars lowered so clearance (for the front end) is important...

Right now Kragen is selling a package including a 2 ton floor jack and 2 jackstands for $20. Seriously, anyone that doesn't have a floor jack & jackstands at home, go and buy this now. 1 ton is like 2000 pounds, so the 2 ton is more than enough to jack up our imports.. not really necessary to throw down the extra bucks for a 3 ton unless you also own like a monster truck.

Tell your dad to ease up with the hammer. He doesn't need to swing a hammer in your engine bay.
If a filter has been overtightened, and/or mangled such that common oil-filter removal tools fail to grip it. Use a Craftsman pipe wrench. the long armed 10-lb one. they give great torque and their teeth bite into the filter real well.
A craftsman pipe wrench gave me victory over a mutilated oil filter. Hopefully someone else will benefit from this tip.
The link above to the NTPOG filter review is a good reference for anyone looking for loyalty/quality in their filter selection.
