auto trans failure to upshift under full throttle
1996 EX 4 cylinder auto, when floored the 1-2 upshift is delayed but shifts at 6000 rpm, the 2-3 upshirt never happens, the rev limiter or fuel cutoff cuts in and the engine just dies until youlet off the gas juut a little then it shifts fine. If you have 9/10ths throttle it shifts fine all the time. This is relegated to floored mode only. Dealer says it needs a new PMC at $795. Any other ideas? Partial throttle shifts are fine in all gears.
thanks, I changed it and checked it, its clean and full, been changed every 30,000 miles, always Honda ATF, I don't think the fluid is a problem, when I had it at the dealer for them to check it they changed the fluid too, said nothing was wrong with it.

I have seen accord transmissions that have an accumulator that hangs, or sticks causing similar problems. Is it throwing any codes? Is your check engine and D4 light functioning properly on start up? On a lot of cars, if the TCM (Trans Control Module) is not throwing codes, the computer is at fault, or casing the problem.
check engine lights and all other lights are normal at startup, not throwing any codes, could it be something as simple as a throttle cable adjustment? or are the shift points all set by the PCM?
on the accord the tranny is controlled by a computer. if you have access to a tranny diag machine it may be able to lead you to the problem
Yeah that's what I was thinking.. The Accumulator sounds right.. And why would it hang?.. My best guess is Check Ball.. But I don't know, haven't rebuilt an auto tranny in a long time..

I doubt your cable would need to be adjusted, unless the fluid pressure is to low. Not very likely, unless someone has been messing with the transmission in the past. The accumulator is kinda like a piston, it rides back and forth in a cylinder, I have seen a lot of accord and prelude tranny's have this problem. It eventually wears causing it to hang or get cocked slightly sideways. Your problem is most likely inside the transmission.
it sounds more like the shift control solenoid valve assembly.
usually with an accumulator or check ball problem, you'll experience harshness in downshifting.
to check the shift solenoids, unplug the connector for them, and measure the resistance between each of the terminals and a body ground. the resistance should be between 14-25 ohms.
BTW, the solenoids are located below the lock-up solenoids on the front side of the tranny.
if the resistance checks out, then give 12V to the solenoids themselves and see if they click, if not replace the shift control solenoid assembly.
