does anyone know what i'm suppose to gap it to? i think my cousin gapped it to 78? and my car is idling weird now...my timing is up to about 15 degrees right now...i'm guessing that it is advanced...does anyone know the stock timing degree?

my car is idling real weird right now...it drops from 750 to about 450-500 and it sounds like the car is about to die...if i leave off the clutch slowly without gas, the car is quickly to stuter and die, and it didn't have before until now...i have also recently changed my spark plugs and gapped them...there is a lot of white stuff on my spark plug wires...which means i'm running lean...but if my idle is down doesn't that mean i need more fuel? kinda lost here...so can anyone give some input? thanks

 

Gapping? sounds like you are talking sparkplugs. And standard timing is 14-16-18. 16 i believe being the default setting.

i think your asking about the thickness of the feeler gauge you should use?
Exh-0.009 to 0.0011 of an inch
Int-0.007 to 0.009 of an inch
with the engine cold. you should insert the gauge between the valve stem and the rocker arm. pull it out and you should feel a slight drag. if you dont andjust the valve. hope thuis helps

 

You can look on the under side of the hood on the left I think but its on one of the white stickers.

Set your timing to 18 advanced unless it starts pinging. And when you adjust your valves, make sure the engine is as cold as can be and that cylinder is TDC on the compression stroke. Always DOUBLE CHECK the gap so you only do it once. I always go with the minmum setting. For instance, it should be exhaust .23 mm plus or minus .02. I go with .21, but that's just an example

 

thanks everyone...i had both valves and spark plugs gapped yesterday...

i had my valves done while my car was still a warm though? hopefully that won't be a bad thing...my cousin has a d16z6...so he adjusted my valves according to his car...so would it be incorrect? those measurements are to what miami_vtecpower said...but under my hood it states for measurements of in 20 <U>+</U> 2 mm and ex 25 <U>+</U> 2 mm....

like i said...my car is idling real weird right now...my wires are lightly coated white...so i'm guessing i'm running lean on my timing...so should i advance it or retard it? thanks for all your help guys

 

if you are running lean you retard timming.

 

oh...i'm also running 89 octane right now...usually i run 92...but gas prices are much too high 1.93 for premium....no good

hmmm...i've just retarded my timing as far back as i can...and i used my timing gun to check it and it's reading 20!!! so i'm really lost right now...could my valves be setting my timing off? before i had my valves adjusted, my timing was reading around 15 or less

my motor also does a little shivering...i never really noticed it before...and some sound from the the valve cover....this ever happen to anyone before? or anyone know what may be wrong? not enough air within to compress?

 

are you sure you're not 20 degrees retarded?? Does your timing light only read TDC or can you adjust by degrees???

And yes, NEVER adjust your valves when its warm. The reason for the clearences is that the engine warms up and metal expands. That's why you need a certain amount of clearance. Do your valves again and set the timing at 16 and leave it there.

 

hmmm...i'm guessing that the gun reads degrees...not really mine, it's the schools...and my teacher helped me read it the first time and it stated 11...so we went up to 15...not knowing the default timing...and i'm sure it's not retarded because i started the gun at 0 and was increasing til the white line was with the V mark

there's a long story to why we had to adjust my valves when it was heated...not exactly my idea to touch it in the first place...but i'll try to redo them again to the setting on my hood....thanks emerica i appreciate your input and help
