ls/vtec turbo with 9:1 pistons?
Hey guys i need some help/advice. I lowered the compression in my bottom end to 9:1, but i want to know if it would still be a benefit to put a vtec head on my car? Im just looking for the next step in power for my set up. I have a reenforced bottom end, but stock head. Im going to run hondata, plus dsm injectors. I just want to know if this head is going to help my car haul ***. If there is a down side to this please feel free to tell me. Thanx
Put a b16 head on it. That will work fine. Even without a turbo and 9:1 pistons my friends frankenstien runs it's *** off. It will be benificial in the end esspecially if your using hondata as your tuning set up. Good Luck.
downside is you may have oil leak issues with a vtec head (not for certain, but it's a possibility) and tuning with vtec is more complicated and usually takes longer as opposed to a non-vtec engine (from my experience).
personally, I'm not too big of a turbo + ls/vtec fan, but people do it and like it. I prefer a straight b18b though when turboing.

Piston that was ment for B16 , b18c Head not for an LS head. That's what he mean. Ls and b16,b18 piston are different then ls piston.

Also, if you are using ARP studs oil leaks can be even more of a problem. I don't know why but my friend and I were having problems with a leak close to the vtec spool soleniod. After we removed the studs for plain old head bolts, the leak was gone. Just letting you know this through my own experience. It does not mean it will happen to you. Let the buyer beware.
you probably didnt torque the arp's to spec if they were leaking
you torque arp's to a higher value than stock head bolts so that may be the problem, or you didnt use the special lube arp gives you and torqued them too low.

that is incorrect, vtec heads use bigger valves. Therefore, the valve relief on a vtec piston is larger than a non vtec piston. If you use a non vtec piston with a vtec head and a big cam, the valve will hit the piston.
We did compensate for torque loss by tighten them to a higher spec. It was probably something stupid that we over looked. Oh well, the problem is solved.

Yeah Im running a GE sleeved LS block with 9:1 pistons and a B16 Head. No major problems so far the car made 360 at 18 psi but it had a lot more in it. The shops hondata emulator broke and they were unable to finsih tuning (Polk Performance). The car is at home in Va now going back to the dyno at the end of the month (im deployed overseas). Only problems I had was I blew the headgasket at like 2000 miles. I swapped out the ARP head studs for stock bolts and it seems to hold up great. I guess the dyno will tell how good they are holding. Ill keep everyone updated on my project.
