HID........fogs?
I picked up a set of OEM fogs for my 00Si and I hate yellow light so I'm thinking of putting HID in it while I install them. I don't really want to have to do this twice....you know?
I've got HID in my stock headlights. I'm not a fan of aftermarket projector housings, even with an oem projector retrofit. I find the the housings themselves are pure garbage. Gapping and ****.....its just bad.
Anyway, back to my original question.....has anybody ever done or seen HID in the stock fog lights? I'm wondering if I'll get any kind of useable light? The guys that I'd be getting them from will rebase the bulb to h3 and put the light shield like they did for my h4 and I get a pretty good beam pattern with the h4's. But, it seems that the bulb may not fit in the fog light. I mean, HID bulbs are pretty long and h3 bulbs are short and stubby which leads me to believe that it won't fit.
I'd like to hear some opinions from you guys.......
however, when I do....do it, I'll definately post some pics here. may not be for a while yet though.

You aren't a fan of retroing OEM HID projetors, into aftermarket projector housings???
eh??? You want to go into some more detail with that?
As far as retroing Hid's into your fogs, its been done. Phillips has a lighting website forum. Go search for that.
P.S , you arent getting enough light already with your HID's? Or did you just throw a "kit" in your H4 housings??
Peace

Oh, I'm getting lots of light from my h4's but I still want hid in my fogs because, personally I think that hid headlights and halogen fog lights looks stupid when they are both on. Also, I don't like the clash of light colour on the floor with white hid headlights and the yellow/orange light from the fogs when i'm driving the car.
Its really just personal preferance.....its mainly a looking stupid colour thing for me. But I think it would be worse if hid in the fogs just scatters light everywhere.
do you have a link to the "phillips lighting website forum"?

no, I don't like the fact that aftermarket projector housings are crap, anyway you look at it. not only do you HAVE to swap in oem projectors in an aftermarket projector housing to get any decent light, they also don't fit right on the car. I have tired a few aftermarket projector housings and they never fit right on the car. There is usually some gap somewhere....some better than other but I cannot live with that.

Anyway, yeah your retrofits aren't going to be perfect, but i have seen some that have been as close to it as possible...
I've seen alot more retros of OEM HID projectors into plain old reflector housings, than what you hvae done.
Anyway, if you dont like the color, why waste another $400 bucks on HID fogs, when you can just get some cool "FaKe hId BulBs" yO!!?! that's what i'd do if money was tight...
Search on google for philips lighting...you shall find it
nah man....cuz with those fake hid bulbs you still get that orange/yellow on the ground when your behind the wheel.....you know what I mean?
Plus, in the winter I spend a lot of time driving in the dark so for me its worth the extra cash.
I foud the page you were talking about but it didn't have the info that I was looking for. I guess if I want the answer to my question I would have to take the plunge and find out for myself.
oh well.....do what you gotta do.

On that site, i've seen anything from the most basic of questions, to the MOST complex!!! you may have to sign up to view all the threads. Did you use the search function?? It may take awhile to find some posts, but it'd be well worth your time. Trust me. I've been on that board for 4 years now almost...Anyway, if you feel you need better fogs, do the retro. I'll try and find something for your lazy ***

Peace
:edit: Oh yeah, if you really were smart, you'd get some yellow HID's or HID's with a lower temp. You aint gonna see **** in foul conditions with HID's in the housings and the fogs... just something to think about.
I personally think you are doing this just for looks. Whatever floats your boat though!
Peace

your absolutely right....I am doing it for looks.
i'm not interested in using the fogs for foul weather.....I want it for more light during good weather. Where I live, I never drive in fog. A lower temp hid bulb will look stupid.
The hid in my headlights are 5k....so the fogs have to be 5k as well. 5k is barely blue.
I searched....honestly I did. I didn't spend 3hrs searching but I did spend about 1.5hrs.
If you do look......Thanks

Yeah, its all good man, i see where you are coming from!
Anyway, yeah that board is a bitch. someone needs to totally go through that site and rework how its set up. Finding stuff is a bitch. The thread i was talking about was over a year old. A guy with an acura CL-S fitted some HID's into his fogs. Looked DAMN good. The cutoff was pretty nice as well. As far as me finding the links/threads...gawd, it could take all damn year!!!
Do you have a pict of what your fog housing exactly looks like? Isn't it a H3 bulb?
peace

where they stock fogs?
if it was a stock fog, then all I have to do is look at a stock cl-s fog and compare it to mine.
yes my fog light bulbs are H3....
here are pics of what my stock foglights look like.....

what kind of stock fog lights are those...?? arent those accord's..... they also look like euro clear auxillary lights for the del sol....???
All i know is you can get HIDs in your foglights in a Lexus or other luxury car.. The head lights and fog lights look the same and it gives the car a pretty bad *** effect.. I personnaly would try to get HIDs into my fogs once i get the fogs.. but only if i can get a good deal on another HID kit.. It would be such great lighting.. you would have the wide spread from the head lights.. and then the insane see everything infront of you from the fogs.. sounds good to me!

Yeah, the output would be mindblowing if everything was set up right. I'll never forget a few years back, there was this mercedes benz about a mile behind me on I-90..brightest looking HID's i've ever seen. WHen she got closer, it was an older style MB (with square lights). It had HID's in both the fogs, and headlights (color matched too).
When she got right behind me, i could see my own shadow of my car in my headlight pattern on the ground! i coulda just shut my damn headlights off!!
The most AMAZING beam pattern EVER! I still don't know which model it was, but i know it was older and squarish
probably around 97-98?
Anyway, he said he has SI fogs, although they really dont look like it, but i think its because they look totally different when they are mounted on the car?!?

They are Si fog lights, believe me. Also, they are not fully assembeled yet....I just took that one out of the box and snapped a pic of it to show you guys the reflector of it. Although its tough to capture a pic of a reflector cuz the flash from the camera just....well reflects off it. Anyway....they are Si fogs!
pic of a car without the fogs
pic of a car with the fogs
Neither of these cars is mine, as I don't have a picture of what my car.
But nobody has really answered my question......
I know that the light output from hid in my fogs will be crazy but what I want to know is if I will get an useable light from the design of the fog lights. Because it has a halogen bulb in it, I'm thinking that the light may be just scattered everywhere.
But I guess from what you guys have been saying about hid foglights on other cars then most likely it will work. Sounds like I'll be the first Civic owner to put HID in my fog lights. hehehe, I like that.

It's tough to say. I mean they guy that had the acura had some good results, but he didnt just pop some bulbs in. He modified the base, and maybe did something to the housing. I think he installed a shield on the HID bulbs as well.
What would be badass is, to retro a OEM HID projector into those fogs somehow. I know it sounds almost impossible, but damn, the results would be worth it!!! Have you measured the width of your fogs??
I'll bet anything if you just throw some HID bulbs in those fogs, the light will go everywhere!!

....the guys at xenondepot.com did the shield for my h4's and the light output is very good. Not OEM projector amazing....but good. And they said that they would rebase the bulb to fit h3 and they would put a shield. So I should be in the clear.
Actually, putting projectors in the foglight would completely destroy the fog light. And I'm pretty sure its impossible because of the design of these fog lights.
I don't think there is really much acura guy could have done to modify the stock fog light, but I could be wrong.
without taking apart the fog light, the measurement that i got for the inner part of the light is about 80mm. The whole housing itself from end to end is 100mm. in width.

Man 90mm OEM Projectors would fit nice in there. I figured your housings were close to that number...
As long as your bulbs are shielded, you should be fine. like you said, you wont get as good of light as the OEM's, but it'll sure give them a run for their money!
Goodluck!
Tell us what you decide to do!
i know that mister jung guy sells those 5000K kits in a rebased H3 type bulb.. so i would just buy from him.. and your concerns about pattern, it should be ecactly the same as it is with halogen just brighter.. HID doesnt create a different beam pattern, it just gets brighter.. unless its a badly modified bulb and doesnt sit in the housing correctly.. but you should be fine as long as your go with H3 HID bulbs and dont try to do some custom ****..
and it is good that you're gonna match the 5000K with the 5000k, cuz if u put 4300K in your fogs, they would make your 5000K's in your headlamps look fakey blue..

i'm going to be doing it pretty soon....most likely in june, cuz thats when its warm here in Ontario. Warm enough to work outside but not sweating buckets.
In may it kind of rains a lot and there is a lot of dampness. Its just hell, june is the best time.
