Default 94 civic hatch.....test pipe question

hey guys...im currently looking at this 94 civic cx that someone is selling. i went to look at the car today and everything was looking good. the mods that were made to the car was an engine out of a 95 ex dropped into it not too long ago. and it also had a short ram intake, your cam gear, and also header. didnt see if it was 4-2-1 header or a 4-1. all that doesnt really concern me until he told me that he had installed a test pipe. now im wondering. is there a way to keep your self from running rich or lean and potentially ruining your engine? since the engine is SOHC Vtec would i be safer to get the VAFC? or does that just adjust the point where your vtec kicks in? or any other suggestions? thanks in advance for your help.

do you know what a test pipe is? All it does is replace your catalytic converter with a straight through pipe. Since the car is obd-1 you dont have an 02 sensor after the cat. It shouldnt adversely effect your performance

this just means that you dont have a cat, he most likely installed the motor and is running it off of the stock piping.

yea i know the test pipe lets the exhaust gases flow out faster(not to mention stink up a bit)...of course im not sure that can be possible because he has the stock tailpipe on but it wont make the engine run rich or anything right? btw...did i mention that it does blow dark smoke when i rev the engine.

ok first off.... test pipe is not going to make it run rich? if anything haveing no back pressure would run lean at WOT if my memory serves me correctly. BUT... if he has the stcok cx exhaust on it... that shouldn't be a worry at all b/c that is like a 1" pipe. and there is no test pipe on that car if it is stock exhaust. i have a 94 cx hatch. the cat. is way up in the manifold right off of the block, so the stock exhaust is just straight solid pipe where there would be a cat. black smoke isn't a big deal. white smoke is what you should be scared of. if i were you i would buy it if the price is right. if you are worried about not having a cat... but a nice 2 1/4" cat back exhaust.. and a "high flow" 2 1/4" cat. hook the cat up to the header, then hook up the exhaust to the other side. you should be fine. then you can pass inspection, emissions.. and get rid of some of that stink and smoke!

and one more thing. a " VAFC" is V=vtec ..A= air ... F= fuel.. and C= controller. get it? there for when you get one... which wouldn't be a bad idea....have it hooked up and then take it to be tuned ( after you do the exhaust stuff...) the tuner will hook up the air and fuel curves so that you don't run too rich or lean out! any other questions? also i would ask him if he bothered to switch out the tranny.. the cx tranny is geared so horrable.. if you are running the cx tranny... you are going to accelerate so much slower than if you had the ex, or Si.. or even the dx is better than that. be able to run like 80 in 2nd..heh good luck
